Just finished reading Daniel Abraham's Dagger and Coin quintet and was blown away. After reading the first Expanse trilogy I was really put off reading anything by Abraham as I wasn't impressed the way others were. Not sure if he just can't write sci fi well (in my humble opinion) or whether he just doesn't work well with Ty Frank but his fantasy was excellent. Especially as I normally like my fantasy with lots of action.

Will definately be checking out his Long Prince series.

Just started reading the Daughter of Smoke and Bone, mostly liking it

Dagger and Coin is fantastic, never could finish the Long Price. Bogged down somewhere in the third or fourth book but the first book is marvelous well worth it even if you don't finish the series.

Off the top of my head: Neal Asher, Alastair Reynolds, Peter F. Hamilton, Simon R. Green (if I'm in the mood), was pleasantly surprised by Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet.

I think one problem I had with Expanse (which is the same with Prince of Thorns trilogy) might've been the huge hype surrounding it?

When you find "hype" affecting your tastes, pos or neg, you must look inward and reassess.

I get the hype thing. Frequently when 'everybody's reading it', I don't want to.
Forum recos and the then upcoming tv show prompted me to The Expanse series, to my utter enjoyment, hype aside.

To be fair, it's not usually something that affects me. The only two times in recent years has been the Expanse and Prince of Thorns trilogies and even then I enjoyed them just enough to keep reading. Though I have been wondering about the Ancilliary Justice trilogy as that's another series that I'm interested in reading that has also had a lot of hype surrounding it.

I'll still be giving the Expanse TV series a go since I might enjoy it more in that format than written.

Ok we have very similar tastes. Love Asher, Hamilton, Reynolds. Simon R Green is a bit meh but I only read his Drood books.

As for hype I usually make a point of not reading or consuming something when it is under maximum hype. I let a few months go by. I read the first three books of the Expanse before the hype.

But coming back to the SF, from the Asher-Hamilton-Reynolds trio - do you like more far-future SF? Or more "science" heavy SF?

Both depending on moon I'm in. One author who covers both is Stephen Baxter, very heavy on the science and some of his books are set billions of years in the future. HIs Xelee sequence is fantastic.

Hamilton's NIght's Dawn trilogy can be a bit heavy going at times, I prefered his Commonwealth books more, not read the latest two, on my to read pile.

Agree on Baxter. He writes insanely long term stuff, though I have noticed that he can ramble a bit.

I also agree about the Night's Dawn books. Far too long and frankly I did not like the central theme at all. Commonwealth books are far better.

I am reading an SF book right now that you may like - Ninefox Gambit

I've heard nothing but good things about Ninefox Gambit, but I'll wait until the series is complete before giving it a whirl. I don't do well waiting between book releases, as I tend to forget what's going on lol

Having finished MAGIC BINDS in earbook, started Ernest Clines' ARMADA. And yes, I know, I know.... wanted something frivolous after the awesome/extended KATE DANIELS series binge and Peter Clines' (no relation) excellent THE FOLD. I can bail any time. And will if the protagonist spends any more time explaining how hot his mother is or otherwise solid narrator Will Wheaton is required to do much more of that awful voice for the ship AI.

In ebook IRON JACKAL stalled halfway just because of limited eyetime for reading. Was enjoying and will get back to it.

In pretty pictures, the upcoming LOGAN movie prompted me on the Marvel Meth app cuing up a WOLVERINE binge to run into the DEATH OF story and the various aftermath titles. Y'know... before they bring him back. Again.

In dead tree nothing. Utterly nothing. The stack sits quietly, amassing dust and misc mail. I think my local second hand store is going to get a massive donation soonish.

I absolutely adore Daniel Abraham's fantasy, and I wasn't blow away by Leviathan's Wake, haven't read any more of the Expanse yet. Nothing to do with word-of-mouth hype either, I read it on release date iirc so not too many would have got there before me.

Anyway, I don't know how to persuade more of y'all that you'd love Max Gladstone's Craft sequence, but seriously guys, you would. It's awesome and cool and funny and the writing is terrific and you're never going to read anything else quite like it. One minute, lawyers are building contracts out of the fabric of reality itself, the next, an immortal god-killing skeleton is bumming around his office in his bathrobe, having a bit of a moan. It's great.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

I'm re-reading Shriek: an Afterword and loving it all over again.

Originally I was planning to move right onto "Southern Reach", but now, with less than 40 pages to go, I feel I may need to re-read Finch as well.

Just finished The Vagrant by Peter Newman. I must say its a very good book. This is post-apocalyptic done right. Loved it.

About 70% into Ninefox Gambit. Another excellent book.

Finch is so good that it's probably the right move to re read that.

Southern Reach doesn't have anything to do with the Ambergris books though. Still an eerie and haunting read though.

Oh, i'm aware they are un-related. But I felt I needed a refresher to Vandermeer's "weirdness" first, to remember the style, as I've been reading too many epics back to back.
