I actually didn't mind the anticlimax, and I do see why it happened and how it may serve towards the continuation of the story. I guess what I didn't like was that I felt like the quality of the storytelling suffered somehow, it felt rushed and clumsy, especially after a noticeable improvement in and tightness of book two. But I also know that I can be very picky with writing and narrative sometimes, even when I do appreciate the story itself. Also, I immediately purchased the second trilogy, so that probably says more than my splitting of hairs about narrative choices

I finished The Bakkakening II:II and I have to say no one handles futility even nearly as well as he does.

Onto Elliott 1-4 (Child of Flame) now. I'm told this is where it gets sloggy but I just survived Cil-Aujas so I'll be reyt.

I've only ever read the first book in the Engineer trilogy but boy was that book uneventful. Least fantastic fantasy book I have ever read.

Weirdly enough KJ Parker is also Tom Holt who wrote fantasy tinged humour that I really liked.

Nicely light read, given the theme is "War. War never changes". Been flying through this on my commute since I picked it up again.

Not having such success with "In Dark Service", so far, alas. Can't realy pinpoint anything wrong with it. The pacing is a tad choppy, but that's not really it. I think it's just that so much was made of the protagonist's dark and troubled past that he has to take up again in the blurb, that I'm just impatient to start getting breadcrumbs of that past.

It's partially my own fault, I suppose. I mentally grouped this with First Law + "Crown for Cold Silver" (not the least due to the srtylistic similarities in the covers), so I was expecting some flashbacks + a more disjointed story that I'd enjoy setting straight. Instead, (so far), i'm seeing a pretty generic rescue quest, being told painfully straight. The world is nice, but not really all that exciting. I'm struggling a bit to stay interested. Hope things pick up, but right now i'm inclined to give the rest of the series a miss.

Just finished The Legates Daughter by Wallace Breem.

Not as good as The Eagle in the Snow. It tied up a bit too quickly for my liking but I still like his writing style a lot.
Pity he only wrote 3. Will probably buy last one of his at some stage.

Engineer isn't great, I stalled out partway into the second, but his standalones are really good. And really grim. His other series have a good rep too.

I liked Deepness even more than Fire Upon the Deep.
