The Last Mortal Bond was dramatic, philosophic and made several especially supporting characters shine, a very good ending to a series I've been highly doubtful about occationally during the trip. Still Staverly might have messed up when choosing his main characters who surely grow during the series but are never as good as some of the supporting cast around them especially in this last one.

A Crown for Cold Silver is much like Abercrombie but with a great deal more humor even at its darkest. It also feels very down to earth and dare I say people acting pretty real towards the absurdity of "heroic" actions. Possibly not the best book I've read recently but certainly one of the more entertaining and am looking forward to the next one.

Burned the latest Alex Verus really shakes things up and was way too short ending in a very nice cliffhanger.


Should probably start up the latest Foreigner novel Visitor next in paper form and Annhilaton Score or Those Above for audiobook at work.

A Crown for Cold SIlver is probably my Book of the Year so far. And I've read a bunch of excellent things these past 3 months.

The Maui storyline had me spitting mad and crying at the same time.



I had my issues with the pretentious the writing was, but the plot of the book was perfect. Especially any part that included Kassad.

But I really don't want to buy 4 paperbacks, I want to find some kind of omnibus. Or, barring that, I'll get it on e-book.

S'funny. I haven't reread HYPERION because it so utterly blew my mind way back when I read it the first time that I don't want to risk the memory.The sheer epic scope of it, the ways the multiple storylines interweave, the characters holy fuck Kasaad... The Shrike. All of it.

I actually started reading up on keats, and reading some Keats poetry when reading the book. Try it. Its really fulfilling

If it's worth anything, his politics don't carry over into his novels, unlike John Ringo. Though I can definitely understand the boycott.


Aside from the well deserved praise for Hyperion, there are a few other novels that I think are well worth reading. Those include The Terror (in a top ten list of my favorite novels, this will have a place for a long time to come), Song of Kali, and the Ilium duology.

Yeah that's the thing. I did not see this politics in Hyperion at all. And Terror was a great book. My usual stance is that I don't give a damn about an author's politics as long as it isn't interfering with the quality of the book

It wasn't till after I read THE TERROR that I heard about his politics and as such he is also on my boycott list now. He's a right wing nut job. A list which also includes Neal Asher who is a vehement climate change denier.

Yeah, he did. That was his Paladin of the Shadows series. I read the first before I knew what I was in for. The rest of his books are ultra conservative, less bdsm, but still follow his right wing ideals.


That said, I still enjoyed his military scifi back when it was the Posleen war and Through the Looking Glass series. Now he's writing doomsday prepper stuff, I think.

For me, I don't mind if someone's in disagreement with me or seems a little unpleasant but when their opinions start being aimed at causing or advocating harm to others I draw the line, whether it's in the work or not.


I am aware from others that his politics mostly don't interfere with his books (although Flashback seems to be an exception) but when someone's agitating for mass murder I'm not giving him my money.
