It's all the Xmas books we've been reading. This thread is filling up fast.

I've chewed through Robert Jackson Bennett's work (American Elsewhere, which is phenomenal Southwest Cthulu in the suburbs stuff, The Troupe which is a traveling troupe of vaudeville acts with a HIDDEN SECRET) and am reading Martha Wells' Raksura books, which are amazing.

I'm lucky to be reading these books.

You need to try Mr. Shivers and the Company Man as well. Both are great. He's definitely one of my favorite authors.

I'm 18hrs into Imajica. What the Fuck!? Seriously? This book is sexually fucked up. I'm taking a break for a while.
Spoiler

I'll probably continue but it'll be a while before I do. I'm listening to the Curious Case of the Clockwork Man no in its stead.

I'm about 200 pages into "A crown for cold Silver", and it's a good read. Still reads similar to "Best Served Cold", but there's several main PoVs with their own plot lines, and they ALL do their bits of flashbacks/retelling the story, so I'm constantly kept interested. The pacing is just right, too-no over-long action sequences and no over-long exposition/infodumps. The main plot is ok so far-I'm suspecting I see the clichéd plot twist/thickening coming, but it may yet get inverted.
Overall, I find the book hard to put away when I get home from my commute, so it's certainly doing something right.

Sounds good. I'm interested in this book, but will probably wait to see how well the sequels are received before reading it.

Strange thing happened with me and this book. I started off really liking it and at about the middle I lost interest. Its still lying around, unfinished. I might try again later this year.

So I am chapters into Sword of the Lictor, and this book is much better than the previous books. The pace seems to have really picked up.

Really Good?
Magician.

EDIT - And the trilogy with Wurts set in Tsurani - after that there's a whole range from goodish to mediocre to crap.

Reading the comic Fight Club 2. I'm on the second issue and gotta say this feels like a complete cash grab. Not impressed at all. I definitely will not be continuing.

I'd go a little further and say
SILVERTHORN
DARKNESS AT SETHANON
are worth reading.
PRINCE OF THE BLOOD is passable. It's pretty much all downhill after that.

I just finished Blood Meridian. It was violent, bloody, and brilliant. At the same time, I'm feeling very numb and drained after that book (which I know is intentional). I think the only option for me to not go into a reading hiatus right now is a Discworld novel. Next up is Lords and Ladies.

Yah, there's just something about it. Even the ornate (purple-ish) prose, which can be a little off-putting at first, adds to it. It's like an overripe fruit: lush but also kind of already rotting.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Id read Magican (the revised edition if you can), Silverthorn, A Darkness ay Sethanon, the Empire Trilogy (coauthored with Janny wurts) and Honoured Enemy.
Definitely read empire trilo before reading Honoured enemy.

Just finished rides a dread legion.
A slight up turn in quality over the last one. The ending was ridiculously rushed, especially given how it ended.
Could have been a great finish to the book, maybe a chance to bring a bit of feeling back for the world and their characters, but was hurried over the line in such a fashion that just removed all emotional contact for me as a reader.

Starting at the gates of darkness. Have an hours work to do at some stage but should get a decent start on it here at work

Finished Cherryh's Invader, which I really enjoyed, then read Bujold's Winterfair Gifts novella, which was pretty meh.

Now I've started Tarkin by James Luceno, which is the first Star Wars novel I've read for about 30 years :(

I started A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. It's a space opera that seems very reminiscent of the Ketty Jay series but, you know, actually in space so Firefly comes to mind too. I've come to like the characters very quickly and the humour is bang on. Solid start.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Silverthorn, Darkness, the Empire trilo and Enemy all flow directly from Magician and all are more or less a complete story.

Everything else follows after or is a prequel added after the fact.

I quit after the Serpent War and found that mediocre at best with a weak as fuck ending that felt tagged on for the sake of stretching a trilogy into four books. But... if you're going to push thru you should probably read (the decent) Prince of the Blood and (the wholly irritating borderline insulting to the reader) King's Buccaneer because they lay the groundwork for Serpent War.

I tried one or two other books after that and just couldn't do it.

From what I hear it's assembled into chapters that handle functions. Some chapters are visual camerawork, some are the linear narrative, some are atmosphere, others world building...and the headers are the indicator of what the particular chapter is meant o be about and how it serves the narrative.

This is something like what Haruki Murakami did in AFTER DARK, where he began and ended chapters with the POV being kind of like the eye of an audience camera that zooms and pans and basically sets up the scene as if it were a movie...not a book.

I hear Zanzibar is like that too.

I agree with Abyss, although I enjoyed the serpent war up to rage of demon king, book 4 is just crap and is the start of the slide.

I cant recommend Honoured Enemy enough though, its a novella really, but probably the best thing set in that universe outside of the Empire Trilogy (makes you wonder how much wurts and forsten influenced the novels over feist)

about 2/3 into at the gates of darkness.
it seems to be a repeat of rides a dread legion, pages and pages of nothing really happening, I can see another hurried finish coming
