Martha Wells - Death of the Necromancer

I found this to be 360 pages of what seemed like a fantasy Dumas novel without the annoying goody-goody musketeers. I loved it. A straight revenge plot carried out through heists turns into something very different and parts of the plot/characters relate subtly back to The Element of Fire (which was the first Ile-Rein book) without making the other book a "must-read" in order to understand this one. Wells makes Valiarde and his main partners relatable and gives the Necromancer a pretty good evil plot to work with.

This series is going in my queue. Sounds right up my alley.
“The others followed, and found themselves in a small, stuffy basement, which would have been damp, smelly, close, and dark, were it not, in fact, well-lit, which prevented it from being dark.”

Finished up Ancillary Mercy and found it very good, it has its flaws but it is often hilarious, entertaining and delivered a brilliant solution and finish to the series which I just couldn't imagine a good end to in one such short book. I'm sure to pick up whatever Leckie wright next.

Ontk book 4 of the apt series.
I took a quick sketch at the ded thread and can see the points on the criticism of Che, but I like most of the main characters, and I was never a fan off overly florid prose so I'm just enjoying the ride

Just ordered book 2 of the Otherland trilogy. While doing so, I stumbled on this recently released MMORPG based off the series: http://store.steampo...com/app/376310/ (check the second video listed — I think that's the Lambda Mall environment, and damn it looks cool), and here's the launch trailer:

David Starkey's Six Wives - I'm on a bit of a history binge.

It's the first Starkey I've read and he's nearly put me off the book with his manner. Ignoring that it's a brilliant, informative read if you're interested in the court of Henry VIII. He's marring it by constantly patting himself on the back for everything he's approached in a slightly different way to previous efforts, or each time he departs from accepted thinking. Seemingly it' has escaped him that it's pretty much the fate of all historians to have someone come along fifty, one hundred, several hundred years later and go "Huh, that's pretty dumb" and come up with a new theory.

Yes, you're great. But please stop telling me every few pages! Posted Image

I've got about 100 pages left on Murakami's Norwegian Wood. I would rate this as one of the strongest works of his I've read. It still had his trademark awkward young man coming of age, but it leaves out the weirdness that so many of his books put into the forefront. I'm also getting to the point that I wonder about how prevelant death is as a theme in his novels. Especially suicide.

Once I finish this I plan on powering through Heir to the Jedi by Kevin Hearne. I'm about 20% through it and so far I'd say it's... ok. It's readable but it's missing the bar set by Tarkin before it.

He's always struck me as being like that. I've considered reading this book several times but been put off when seeing him interviewed. Good to know that it's enjoyable in spite of that. Have you read Alison Weir's book on the same subject?

Over the past few days I read Cornwell's The Empty Throne, which was hugely entertaining as usual.

Now I'm halfway through Ian McDonald's latest, Luna: New Moon. I took a chance on this because it's currently £1.99 on Kindle, plus I saw a few reviews calling it 'Game of Thrones in space'. It's not. It's much, much better than that. It's bloody brilliant so far.

I love his work too. This was actually the eighth book by him that I've finished. As of now I'd say it ranked second under Sputnik Sweetheart, and the only reason for that is that the unrequited loves theme from SS struck a stronger chord in me.

Also, I broke down and I am now 100 pages into The Aeronaut's Windlass. So far it's completely living up to the hype you guys have generated.

9 chapters into Shadows of the Apt 4. A whole bunch of new plotlines erupting.

On my wife's recommendation, I read Sanderson's The Rithmatist before returning it to the library. It was pretty fantastic. Too bad we've got at least 2 years until the sequel.

Now back to Moorcock's Elric...

Started into the 3rd Emberverse book by S.M. Stirling MEETING AT CORVALLIS. It's nice to be almost out of the woods of "establishing the post-Change world" and into the meat of living in that world. The original generation that started all this are getting older and the first post-Change generation is growing up.

And Astrid and Eilir's Dunedain Rangers continue to be my favourites in this series.

Is that the one with the chalk drawings?

I'm reading The Broken Eye - book 3 of Lightbringer (I've read each book, each year just after my birthday)
Apt is the only one who reads this. Apt is nice.

Uh I guess I'm enjoying it more as I go along cos it is drawing me in. Book 2 seemed very Edeard-heavy so it was weird in that it felt more like a fantasy book than a epic space opera sf. Not complaining mind, I love the dream sequence chapters but it did make the bits in between seem a bit less important even though I know they're not. I am really enjoying it though.
