Halfway into Ken Liu's the Grace of Kings after a recommendation but can't really enjoy it, to me it feels like something is off with the language. In my head it just ends up a simpler and more cliche relative of Under Heaven/River of Stars all while I want to like it for the setting and quite a lot of reserched detail. I'm not done yet maybe it gets better.

The Red Knight by Miles Cameron. I guess I'm on a newer author kick. This one I really liked and I think he has the most potential of all the new authors I've read. I'm already into the second book The Fell Sword and am enjoying it so far.

The first time I tried to read this I got stuck early on on the overly detailed descriptions of everything, but I gave it another go a few months down the line and really liked it in the end. Really, really love the world, and the way magic is depicted.

Ya, it took a while to get going for me too, and then slowly got better and better.

reading "A Cruel Wind" by Cook. I've had it on hand for a while, but it takes a little time to get into the 1st book. Good stuff, about 1/2 finished
HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Whatever happens, this is justice. For me, this is justice. Vote HiddenOne Finally, I am at peace.

Finished "Obsidian and Blood"

Very original, great fun for anyone with interest in exotic mythologies.

The stories are essentially mystery novels with a big helping of supernatural politics. Each one gets progressively more political, and the last book in the trilogy got a bit grating, Aas it kept introducing more and more new things, making it virtually impossible to figure things out until the author deemed to tell us. And the conclusion was a tad anti-climactic.

Still the setting carries the books. overall enjoyed a lot.

Next I'll try to quickly read "The Bloodline Feud", volume one of Charles Stross' "Merchant Princes" series done in omnibus. Afterwards I'll probably start my Malaz re-read getting ready for Fall of Light.

I'm reading When The Heavens Fall by Marc Turner. There was a mention of it earlier in the topic that looked rather like a sockpuppet author trying, badly, to push his novel. But this is legit and really rather good so far. However, I quote:

Quote

All eyes turned to Mottle. The mage sighed. "Alas, the sordid taint of the forest's earth-magic makes it impossible for Mottle's arts to penetrate its borders- earth is dominant over air, yes, just as air rules water, water fire, and fire earth. But the Currents bear warning of a convergence to the south and west."

"Convergence?" Reynes said. "Of what?"

"Power. Something is drawing energies to it like a lodestone."

It's so fucking Malazan. In a good way, and not a slavish imitation, but it's pretty amusing at times, even early stages, when I read something and it's like, wait, SE and ICE didn't write this?

I have read a small part of this. Agree with all of the above. Mottle's style of speaking reminded me of Kruppe

Rather curious how a review of a good book auto-assumes the poster is the author. Glad you're enjoying it anyway.

Started a Scribd free trial after finding a ludicrous amount of audiobooks I'm interested in, and first up is His Majesty's Dragon read by the king of audiobooks, Simon Vance.

Well, like Baco said, when a person registers on a forum to push a book with their first post, it's always going to raise suspicion. The fact that the review seemed tailored to chase fans on this particular board didn't help.

I don't think any book published by Tor can really be considered obscure. I hadn't been registered to this forum prior because it's got abysmal activity compared to other outlets, and I only recently noticed there's a mediocre-ly-at-best active book thread here. Sorry for pushing a book in a book thread.

I don't think you cast wide enough a net with those insults. It reads only moderately defensive and the barbs are sharp but not deep. Apology NOT accepted.

That's actually a relief. Can't wait to tell my abysmal wife and our mediocre-at-best kids the news.

Note if you think this Board is slow then stay away from 17th Shard! You can wait weeks for replies there.

I am curious. What exactly is thought to be "fast" in terms of fantasy and sci-fi forums? I have tried a couple of general forums and they are so sprawling its almost impossible to get a meaningful conversation started

Some reddit threads can generate high volume discussion but what constitutes a Regular is pretty scattered.
Some of the Jordan and GRRM boards used to turn over a high volume. Some Urban Fantasy author boards I watch still do.
Otherwise this forum is pretty standard and better than most with a solid core of actual participants who mouth-drool less than most.

Which is why Baco said 'obscure or new'. And it's not as if your post made it clear that it's a big Tor publication in any case.

We don't get too many actual sockpuppets here in any case (probably because of the abysmally low level of activity), but the Westeros boards do, and a lot of them look a great deal like yours, although yours was on the higher end of the quality scale. There's a reason why a few of us clearly had the same thought.

Anyway, as I say, it turns out to be a good book and yours was a legit review, which is why I clarified that for everyone else who might have been put off by it.

I bought When the Heavens Fall as an e-book. I'll read it in about a month or so (have a stack of six or so books I want to push through first).
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.
