who doesn't love stories of Rome?

I know that feeling. Not only do I have a shelf full of Roman novels and several shelves full of Roman non fiction, I got that virus bad enough to write a novel series about them myself. :p

Plus, I have a job that includes editing books, and right now I got an interesting new essay collection about the Romans on my desk. Getting paid for doing what one loves is the best thing evah.

I started The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin. I wasn't too sure about it right out of the gate, the first person narrative was a little jarring. Once I got use to it and got to the part where Yeine meets Nahadoth and Sieh I was hooked. Can't wait to see how the book progresses.

That is also the point where the book hooked me. Looking forward to what you think of the entire book

Thirded. I really enjoyed Jemisin's gods.

Fourthed. I'm glad Jemisin's getting a bit more attention on here recently.

I particularly like the way she portrays a world completely awash with magic, and in a way totally unfamiliar traditional fantasy or even any sort of epic fantasy. See also: Felix Gilman's Thunderer/Gears of the City duology, Max Gladstone's Craft sequence.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Ask this question and you are going to have a sharply divided forum. I did a whole read through last year. So lets see... without Spoilers....

You might think it starts off as very generic fantasy, with clear parallels to LotR. but after the first book things pick up. After the third book or so the scope of the series dramatically expands. Now people usually have trouble after the 6th book, with the 10th coming in for particular flak. People complain about toolittle plot progression. That is a factor, but in most it is balanced out with moments of pure genius. You probably know Robert Jordan did not finish the series, Sanderson did using Jordan's notes. So the last three Sanderson books have a big change in tone and type, due to the authorial change. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, mind you.

Good things about the series: Huge, detailed world-building, great attention to characterisation and detail, lots of attention to different cultures etc. Some genuinely awesome scenes, and in most of the books engaging plotlines.

Bad things about the series: the characters can be really irritating, some plotlines can be frustrating, the large number of characters makes it very hard to keep track of whats what. Often great detail given to seemingly unimportant stuff.

Finally, its a huge series. Fourteen chunky books makes it just slightly smaller than Malazan with SE and ICE combined.

Should you read it? Having read it myself, I think its a fantasy landmark (though an irritating one) and serious fantasy readers should read it at least once.
If you do decide to read it, and need help with confusing stuff, or just need to vent, start a thread. I did. It helped.

Started reading the second-hand copy of Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind whilst volunteering at my local Oxfam bookshop; ended up deciding to buy it. My 'serious' reading (a sociological study of the culture of natural history surveying in late 19th and eary 20th century America) has unfortunately suffered neglect as a consequence. About a third through; very good so far.

Short answer: worth reading, don't feel bad if you skim large chunks of books 7-10.

Handy if you're doing your business in the forest.

Every once in a while I get tempted to read the last few WoTs, but I'm not sure they would even make sense to me at this point, and i'm damn sure not taking on books 1-10 again.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Ha! I thought I knew what to expect, but I was only half right. :p
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Finished Sanderson's STEELHEART, and it's a stellar read. The final quarter was my favourite part, blows open the world and sets the stage for the future books to play in that world. Picked up the second book FIREFIGHT in hardcover on my way home tonight. Can't wait to read it.

Probably going to finish Abnett's SALVATION'S REACH next, and then move onto TO GREEN ANGEL TOWER PART I by Tad Williams.

It's good to be a Sanderson fan. I understand that not everyone loves his books, but if you do, you know you can count on him to consistently keep putting out books that you'll enjoy.
