[Salt-Man Z]

Finished Thomas Sweterlitsch's Tomorrow and Tomorrow a couple nights ago. It was really good, basically a sci-fi murder mystery that takes place in an all-too-plausible future roughly 50 years from now.

Started in on Assail last night, trying to keep my expectations low. It's a little weird seeing ICE do Imass and Jaghut, mostly because it's also weird that he's never touched them before.

Love it. Don't know that I've ever seen them be monsters that can be manipulated by proxy by necromancers. Kind of ingenious actually!

Very effectively neutralizes all possibility of vampire romance. The steamy men body thingy is not really there in the first two books iirc, you know. This series is wayyyy more kick-butt action, and Kate's humourous narration. And the huge bloody sword. I loved that sword. There was something so beautifully in your face about an urban fantasy heroine with a broadsword who likes hacking through people.

Kind of ok, but the YA angle seems to have done away with all the elements that I like most about Abercrombie - primarily his black sense of humour.

It also has some very obvious similarities to the Broken Empire, in worldbuilding (or destroying) at least.

Not bad, I suppose I can't complain as it's aimed at a younger audience and I guess it hits that target.

25% in Tigerman by Nick Harkaway. I love his style. Not sure where it's going cause I didn't read the synopsis but it's really good so far.

Also almost finished listening to Singularity Sky. I've had a hard time with this one cause I'm working on a metal railing so I'm doing a lot of grinding and welding so I've missed a bit of it. Also started listening to Runner by Patrick Lee for my drive and still listening to Hard-boiled Wonderland by Murakami for my workouts. Both are good so far.

I bought Shift and Dust by Hugh Howey on audible so I'll probably be listening to those next.

Finished The Fall by del Toro and Hogan. Will definitely be picking up book 3. Now I'm working my way through the rest of Salute the Darkness. Stuff has hit there about 2/3 of the way through.

Bought it on release but haven't got around to it yet, heard mixed reviews of it so interested to see for myself!

I would say the dark humor is still intact - it's just not used as often because the story is focused much more on the development of the Half King and his journey than it is on a band of already bad-ass adventurers. It's hard for a teenager/young man to run into dark humor situations when he's trying to survive...

I finished Woken Furies. I was really enjoying it for the first half, but I thought it went completely off the rails in the second half and ended up overstaying its welcome by a long way.

Now I'm re-reading Deadhouse Gates.

Finsihed Ilona Andrews MAGIC BITES, and was truly impressed. Great world building and characters! Very little in the way of what Abyss might call urban fantasy pr0n, and actually I'd liken this more along the straight up lines with SOME romance, but very mininmal. Will definitely be continuing on with the series!

Finished Widows House. Pretty interesting way the series os going I must say.
After finishing, I staged a coup against my own TBR list, overthrew its tyranny and now I am free! So now I am reading the Spirit Thief by Rachel Aron which was 5th in my TBR list and seems to be a tongue-in-cheek fantasy. Vive la Revolution!

Finished Salute the Dark...wow. Moved on to The Scarab Path. It's taking a little getting use to. I'm curious to see what happens now.

In addition to Salute the Dark, I have also started Caliban's War. So far I am finding this much harder to put down than the first book, Leviathan Wakes. It probably has something to do with the increased number of POVs. We'll see how the rest of the book holds up.

I deviated significantly from my plan and read Starship Troopers (turns out I'm almost certain I read it as a kid... everything seemed incredibly familiar, even if I didn't remember any details) and The Forever War. 'Twas pleasant. Guess I'm back into reading scifi, after a 10-15 year hiatus.
