its good, not what I was expecting, and wierd as hell in places.

Interesting... i couldn't make it halfway thru that book. The endless reminiscing about life pre-apocalypse became tedious for me to the point i was actively hoping zombies would eat most of the characters immediately. Neat post zompocalypse setting, but i found the writing dragged.

Finished Pullman's GOLDEN COMPASS. Leaving aside a lot of the 'oh isn't that conveeeeeenient' elements and the at times too facile child-pov, i did like this. The world is interesting and the pace moves along nicely. Have started bk 2 THE SUBTLE KNIFE.

Also finally got into Tidhar's THE GREAT GAME. Only 2 chapters in but liking more than the earlier books in the trilogy/triad/trinity/three book thingy damn you worry now you've got me doing it...

Finihsed Aaronivitch's WHISPERS UNDER GROUND and found my feelings about it align with everyone else. Another SOLID entry in the series, and it really is my second fave UF series next to Butcher, but the ending just kind of happens with no climax. And while that's fine, it's not the kind of thing that made me gush about it. I've got BROKEN HOMES in the pile I'm taking with me on the honeymoon (along with SKIN GAME)! EDIT: I want Dresden to come to England, meet Felix Castor and Peter Grant, and solve a big mystery together!

Tried out Mclellan's PROMISE OF BLOOD, and gave up at around the 100page mark. Cool ideas and world and magic...but cardboard cutout characters, and the sort of short choppy sentences (ex. Lee Child) that I absolutely LOATHE in my fiction. Also, this guy needs to look up how to use pronouns and get on that, because if I had to read one more paragraph with the subject of the paragraph's name mentioned 5 times, I was gonna scream. Not for me.

So I started MIDNIGHT FALCON by Gemmell, and of course, it's great!

Finally finished Cryptonomicon . That was a slooooow read, for many reasons.

It really DID take forever to pick up though. I don't know why, but WW2 just never struck me as a particularly interesting historic period. Weird, I know.

Once it gets going, Stephenson is great, as always. But my, does it take for freaking ever.

The evolution of the modern day plot line, once it got more action-y was great. but towards the end i was reading the WWII bits just to see how they'll slot into the main story.

Next will be reading "War Master's Gate", Bk 9 of Tchaikovsky's "Shadows of the Apt"

I've given up on Mary Gentle's Ash: A Secret History. I got 650 pages into it and realised that I just didn't care about the characters or what was going on. I thought it started really well, but it got so slow and bogged down. It's the second of her books I've given up on - and I hate giving up on books (but life's too short etc etc and I've already wasted the best part of a week on it) - so I guess her writing is just not for me.

Haven't decided what to read next.

Sweet, I did not know that. I will now be reading it very soon.

I'm currently reading The Quick by Lauren Owen. Mostly very good so far, despite being not a book I'd have picked up if I'd known what the big twist is going in (I was initially disappointed by what was revealed after the first section, but it's working). I do suspect that the big mystery about what it is is precisely to draw readers like me in, since it really isn't all that revelatory, but I'll keep it anyway.

That makes it sound like I'm a bit down on the book, but I'm really not - it's drawn me in despite misgivings.

Reading Dust of Dreams and listening to Happy Hour in Hell by Tad Williams. Finished Neverwhere by Gaiman and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Finished Influx by Daniel Suarez this morning. Enjoyable enough though nothing groundbreaking. Finished the day with a little of Shadow of the Torturer and Caine Black Knife (a couple hours of each); didn't want to start anything new cause I'll be starting Authority tomorrow. And after that, the Crimson Campaign.
