Still on ILSE WITCH and I am surprised how much I am enjoying.

Finished DRAGON WING, and...I won't be returning to that series.

To rinse that fail away, it's back to the dresdencrack: CHANGES.

OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

It was still dragging its heels with the 'boy-to-warrior story plus mandatory female love interest' about 3/4 of the way through, when I left it out of sheer boredom.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

More or less on the half way through mark it does begin to change.

Traveller was missing stuff if he only took in a YA'ish standard novel by 3/4's into it.

But a lot of that novel hinges on the last parts.

As to me, I finished Sebastien De Castelle's TRAITOR'S BLADE, and holy shit what a stellar read!

Musketeers + Magic + Saints + Ninjas + Zippy dialogue = one of the best books I've read this year so far.

You should all read it. It's so effortless to read too, it just flows along like a river.

Loved it. Can't wait for book 2.

And now I don't know what to read next.

Tbh I found the last parts of Blood Song by far the worst. The Harry Potter stuff was cliched but quite engaging, but the ending was just uninteresting to me.

That's what I was told about the Codex Alera books. At least they had some original concepts in them. I've read enough books now to realise when I'm not enjoying one when I'm 3/4 of the way through... and really, I'd rather read something that's good all the way through than trudge through something just to get to the last quarter.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I can relate, I couldn't finish the Darkness that Comes Before - I was hoping that the Judging Eye would be different as it was listed as Book 1 of a series

Bakker get good reviews, so I am surprised - he would be the 1st reco from this forum that hasn't suited me well, that's why I was giving him another chance

I finished Grossman's Magician King. Beautiful book and full of homages to Narnia and more without being cloying or servile.

The writing is phenomenal and the very fact that Quentin isn't the smartest, the most likable or the most powerful is a good thing. The secondary characters shine and he lets the story get on with aplomb.

I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I haven't read Fortune's Pawn yet, though having read a few very positive reviews it's on the list, but having recently finished The Boy with the Porcelain Blade: meh. It's enjoyable enough while reading it, but for all the good ideas within it (and there are plenty), it doesn't come together into anything memorable.

I also finished The Edda of Burdens trilogy, and while it doesn't go anything like I expected from the initial impressions, it's really very good. The third book in particular makes some odd choices but I was putting the book down just so I could fret a bit more about the danger to the main characters before continuing, so it was doing something right.

Appreciate the feedback PG; removed Porcelain from my wish list and still not sure about Fortune's Pawn as it's described a bit as a sci-fi romance and I've no desire for that. May try Hard Magic. Also, about 60 pages in Starfish. Watts' investigation into extreme personalities in extreme situations is mind-blowing. Loving it.
