Finished ROTCG! Onto TTH!

I found it so difficult to get through ROTCG. Its not that I didn't like it, I just dragged on reading it. I started TTH and was immediately sucked in and I am now back to reading every spare moment I have.

Steelheart was good.

Ended up choosing Steelheart because I'm pretty sure I can finish it by Tuesday. That way, I can rip right into The Wurms of Blearmouth. Emperor is up right after that.

That's fine. Emperor starts with a Prologue rather than a chapter anyway.

Yeah. I know what you mean. I loved it but it was harder to plow through than the Erikson books.

Edit: what's your reading order after TTH? I'm going SW, OST, BAB, DOD, TCG.

Not really seeing that. if you want to stretch things, you could argue that Tyrion Lannister was a total ripoff of Miles Vorkosigan and on and on.

I've heard several other people online also make the Tyrion/Glotka connection. Even though Glotka is 6 feet tall or whatever I always imagined him as a dwarf simply because his voice is almost identical to Tyrion's.

I have read both series twice and cannot for the life of me understand why you see Glotka as so similar a character to Tyrion as being a ripoff. I can see some similarities. They both have a rather cynical view of their own condition and they're both very intelligent. Not an uncommon archetype.

That's hardly a ripoff. I'd be curious to hear you elaborate further on what makes them so identical. You say voice, which I'd for one would disagree with. In my opinion their approach to pretty much everything differs substansially, both mentally and in practice.

Finally finished S. by JJ and Dorst. Full thoughts on Ded-Review thread...worth it? Oh yeah? Difficult to read and understand? Probably one of the most complex I've ever dipped into. Cryptic as that is.

Now back to my yearly re-read of the HARRY POTTER series (GOBLET OF FIRE)...which always just leaves me feeling good.

Seems Abercombie is just not for you. It did take me a while to "get" Abercrombie. The plots are pretty bland and the worldbuilding is uninteresting. But sometime during the second book the humor just started to jive with me.

I read 1-3 back to back and steadily enjoyed them more. I suspect that if i hadn't read them that way tho i would have been really less impressed with the opening trilo.
That said, BEST SERVED COLD i loved.

But back to the OP, if you're still at 'awful' by the end of LAK, bail.

On the reading front, haven't quite moved to something new yet. Audiobooks of THE HUNGER GAMES have been holding my fiction buzz more or less... the series does get better in the second book. Not 'awesome', but holds my interest for the most part.

Somewhere in Joe's head is a history of the BLADE ITSELF world/universe...and I agree as far as worldbuilding goes, it's sparse through all the books. He's much more interested in character...but then I'd be lying if I didn't say that it pissed me off to get twinkles and spark-like mentions of history and magic, and the gods ect of the world...only to have him never dip more than a toe in those waters. From that vantage-point his world building could be SCADS better.

I've finally got hold of Jim Butcher's Storm Front and think that I've made the right decision. Dresden's sign on his office door sold me and the fact that he's listed in phone books, too. Not your everyday sorcerer, I suppose, which might just be exactly what I'm looking for.

let him enjoy "Storm Front", leisurely read "Fool Moon", unsuspectingly open "Grave Peril", never suspecting that a few hours later in the middle of the night he'll be banging on his closest bookstore's door, demanding MOAR DRESDEN!!!! and frothing at the mouth....


if anything, it'll be slightly less painful on his wallet.

Edit: Re: Abercrombie and world-building. "First Law" is gloriously trope-tastic. Yes, there are many occasions when Abercrombie messes with the tropes this way and that, but by and large, its very much "by the numbers" fantasy series. The "realism" in the background is a nice framing device, but at it's core, "First Law" is very much like an action comedy movie--you either like its tone, or you don't imho.

I kinda stopped caring about worldbuilding and consistency. Usually, I enjoy piecing together fictional histories, but in the case of "First Law" it just felt that trying to read this as a world, rather than a setting where some adventures happen was just a waste of time.
