Since Lynch's latest disappointment, I have found myself unable to enjoy reading, though I have a load of worthy books d/loaded - it's just so depressing when this happens to an author who was so full of potential.

finally finished with Robin Hobb's ROYAL ASSASSIN,, started a few chapters of ASSASSIN'S QUEST,,

I'm curious:

If I read in between the THE LIVESHIP TRADERS,, are there parts of it that mentions events in THE FARSEER TRILOGY ?

or after I finish ASSASSIN'S QUEST,, If i jump immediately to THE TAWNY MAN TRILOGY, is it okay to skip THE LIVESHIP TRADERS and read it any time I want?

I think there are a few nods between series, but you can leave off Liveship to finish the Fitz books first...especially cause the second series is SO good!

Just wanted to say thanks to Obdi for recommending the First Law Series.

These books are all kinds of fun. Had a shaky start so I made the mistake of setting it aside but picking it up again a week ago, the story REALLY grew on me.

I have planned the First Law trilogy and co to read after finishing the Malazan series, just gettin onto FOD then the Bauchelain and Korbal Broach then im done. Also going to try the Broken Empire series by Mark Lawrence, has anybody else read them?

The Broken Empire has generated quite a bit of noise here around.

Finished Banks' Inversions (good, as always, but not his best, although I appreciated the Napoleon references) and am currently halfway in the hardcover fist-thick volume of Lyonesse (Jack Vance), starting up again after I got to around 25% earlier this year.

Reading a lot or in consistent stretches is tough when you've got a half year old kitten whose favorite spot to stretch is on top of whatever you're holding.

So I'm filling out today with a short piece by Alex Griecan set in his Scotland Yard universe.

As much as i was enjoying Tidhar's CAMERA ONSCURA i hit a wall around the halfwayish mark and needed a change of pace.

Cole's SHADOW OPS: CONTROL POINT is filling that need nicely. Solid action, shooty 'splody good fun. I see the weak points but overall it hit the right spot in the thinkymeatz.

Of course that leaves CAMERA and Ruckley's EDINBURGH DEAD sitting at the halfway mark... alt-hist/steampunk doesn't seem to be my thing this year. Will finish them soon'ish, i think. Just not feeling any rush.

Cole does an overall good job, but he stumbles a bit with this first outing.

I feel the other-world portions of the tale suffer from a SERIOUS lack of worldbuilding of any kind...luckily the main glut of the story and characters are really quite compelling enough to push it through.

But at parts I could tell...Oh, here is a real life military officer who has decided to pen an Urban Fantasy novel...like his military knowledge feels on a level that kind of grated on me. Like a medical Doctor writing a Fictional ER book would not be able to put down his/her own personal medical nerdery where their real life career was concerned long enough to not have it feel overbearing to a casual reader.

Just my two cents. Haven't read Book 2 yet because of that...but Book 1 was defo entertaining.

I have. IMO all three trilogies (still haven't read the fourth yet) are telling one long story and I'm glad I read them in order, even if LS is the best of the lot. The third series definitely spoils several key revelations of the LS books as well as concluding several series-long storylines, but who knows, maybe it will work laterally anyway? It'd be interesting to hear the conclusions from someone who's reading them 1-3-2.

I read 1-3-2, only realised live ships was part of the main series when reading 3 and various things were introduced which made it clear there was more story elsewhere. Personally I think it would have worked better going 1-2-3, as some things are revealed in the third trilogy which spoil some of the live ship books.

Over the weekend I read The Hobbit, and I'm now about three quarters of the way through Sarah Pinborough's Mayhem, which is reasonably good.

Enjoyed Alex Griecan's short fiction so much I picked up the first proper book in the series THE YARD. And of course it gave me creepy Victorian Era nightmares.

It's NOT good though, NOT enjoying.

After about 50 more pages, this book could not be more boring. I assumed the slow set-up at the beginning was just getting things going. It wasn't. Apparently the whole book is this boring.

Sigh. Should have stuck with my plan to read DANGEROUS WOMEN today.
