If you want something in an Asian setting (though it isn't necessarily Samurai-ish), I can't recommend Daniel Abraham's The Long Price Quartet highly enough if you've not already read it.

Or Chris Woodings' "Braided Path"

Or Sean Russell's The Initiate Brother and Gatherer of Clouds. More of a Buddhist feel but definitely Asian inspired. Both really good though.

Or Guy Gavriel Kay's Under Heaven and River of Stars. Historical fantasy set in the Kitai Empire (inspired by China's Tang and Song dynasties). Fantastic novels too.

I just finished LIes of Locke Lamora, and I am very satisfied
HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Whatever happens, this is justice. For me, this is justice. Vote HiddenOne Finally, I am at peace.

Or Elizabeth Bear's Range of Ghosts (and presumably the sequels, not got there yet though). These are set a bit further north and east - set across cultures based on Mongolian and Tibetan. I'm just re-reading the first after having read it not that long ago, and it's holding up very well to a reread. I love her myth-making.

Or Alma Alexander's _Secrets of Jin-Shei_, very Chinese-flavoured with mythology and characters and motivations -- if you can find it, that is.

And for those reading the Wuirts WoLaS -- I love these books and desperately want to find out what happens, and have corresponded with Janny on occasion; but do you not find the excessively flowery dialogue wearying at times?

Bizarrely not one of those books are from a person of Chinese (or other asian ethnicity) origin. Weird how that happens. Currently reading Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese for class, it's pretty interesting so far. Really like the opening story about how the main characters family got their name.

Oh god yes! I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to backhand Arithon and tell him just to shut up and get on with it.

Btw, I finished The Protector's War last night. All in all a good book. There is a particular p.o.v. that tends to drag on for me who had a pretty decent chunk in the middle of the story that just made it drag a bit for me. Once I made it back to the two other p.o.v.s from this book though... What happened to those last 200 pages again? Wait, WHAT time is it?

True, that. I've been wondering that lately, too, because I have been looking for books written by asian authors. The conclusion I have come to was that not much is getting translated, and what does is rarely fantasy themed. Horror, SF or postapocalyptic stuff is what comes closest. Those books I've read, though, seems to have some kind of otherwordly feel built into them despite modern-day-settings.

I do recommend Wolf Totem by Jiang Rong, while I'm at it. Though one should not expect much in the way of action or drama, as it's more of a quasi-autobiographical novel. There's also a bunch of japaneses SF floating around. No fantasy novels I can think of, though.

Starting Bernard Cornwell's THE PAGAN LORD.

Finished The Player of Games. This book...pretty engaging from the start, but there's a point like 50-60% in...a certain stroll through the city followed by a flip through some interesting television broadcasts...that changes the mood entirely and made me start reading at double speed. Totally awesome.

Now I'm gonna tackle Doctor Sleep, see what's up there.

I'm reading the first of Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner series - Luck in the Shadows. Seems to be pretty standard fare trope-tastic sword & sorcery so far, with "foppish bards" and a young naive protaganist, but it's still pretty good overall. The worldbuilding and pacing are good so far so I'll keep going.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Bout 1/2 way through Great North Road and I'm not really impressed. Oh well, better than listening to the radio. Also about a 1/3 of the way through listening to Redemption Ark (read before) and really enjoying it - again. Haven't read a thing in two weeks as the wife and I have discovered Breaking Bad. Next listens are Blood Song and either Promise of Blood or the Judging Eye (though I may wait on this one until Unholy gets a release date).

Seems like a good 1/4 of what everyone is reading lately has Blood in the title.

Hmm ... just finished Ponniyin Selvan - historical fiction with some fantasy elements. It isn't Chinese but its certainly of Asian origin and I'd recommend it heartily. Got the original read to me a bit at a time over a six month period and it's now definitely up there among my favourites. Free (legal) e-books of the English translation are available on the tubes in case anyone is interested.

Finally finished Blindsight, which was great in many ways. Unique aliens, well thought out science stuff, interesting philosophy and vampires in space!

Haven't decided what to read next but I downloaded quite a few free classics for my touchpad. Maybe Faust, it's a must-read after all in German literature.

Faust is perhaps the greatest work of litterature ever written. I've read every translation in both English and Norwegian that I've been able to get my hands on, and I deeply regret that I didn't pay enough attention in German class back in school to read the play in it's original language.

So, go read Faust.

Just drop GNR and jump over to Blood Song or Promise of Blood. GNR doesn't get any better.
