What's with the sudden mini-VanderMeer love-in on this board? Not that I'm criticising, he's awesome.

Also the general consensus on Republic of Thieves seems to be that it's not as good as Lies, but is probably better (or at least as good as) Red Seas, so I'm looking forward to it.

I've been a proponent of Vandermeer's brilliance on these Boards for years. I even made a few mafia games - with Vengeance - in the setting some years back.

Little Red Reviewer loved it, so I'm looking forward to it.

Red and I often agree...though sometimes we don't...hopefully this is one of the times we agree. But I'm not going to pull any punches with Lynch after the long wait, I'm going into it as honest as I can be with no delusions left-over from LIES greatness.

Heads up for those who haven't read the RoT reviews yet, if you want to avoid any and all spoilers don't read Pat's review yet. I rather wish I hadn't.

Ugh, now that was just in time, I was about to read it.. Phew. Any reviews without spoilers out there?

Anyway, I just finished A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki and I loved it. It's wonderful, and I'll have to reread it at some point because all the Schrödinger's cat and multiple worlds stuff went a bit over my head, I'm afraid, and felt a bit tacked on, but that may be because I read through it really fast. A book I shall be keeping and rereading, though.

Gods, he doesn't even warn you at the opening that there will be spoilers.

Pat always does that. It's why I stopped reading his reviews.

I didn't read the review but I can't believe that Pat gave the book a 5/10. For him to give it below a 7, he must have really not liked it.

I didn't find any spoilers in the Little Red Reader review linked up-thread.

I have not read any of these books. Are you recommending them to me D'rek? On your head be it (after I finish Dresden re read of course)

From one Star Wars GN HB to another: now re-reading the DARK EMPIRE saga.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Absolutely LOVING Forge of Darkness at the moment. I know TCG was quite divisive & put a lot of people off SE. FoD seem to be a "return to form" if you like & is reminding me why I love SE so much. And I liked TCG, but it was really hard work! I think that I will enjoy this reread immensely.

Finished Aaronovich's BROKEN HOMES. Great book, ending included. Restored my faith in the series after some doubts post-WHISPERS UNDERGROUND.

Finished up Republic of Thieves and well don't want to say it but Pats review above hits most of the important parts, strong start and then not much to write home about.

Easily on of the weaker new book I've read this year :).

Damn, that sucks to hear :)

Still gonna have to pick it up and judge for myself, but I was hoping for a bit of a return to form. Maybe not that surprising given he seems to have had a hard time while writing it.

I was quite afraid of this. Like I said, I'll judge for myself....but yeah my expectations are low.

Just finished Ex-Heroes.

Great blend of genres; Watchmen crossed with.. Walking Dead? But with extra Zzzap.

Anyhoo, really enjoyed it, cheers 'Byss for the recommendation!

Not worth a spoiler really, but best bit.. couple of heroes on patrol, comparing which ex-celebrities they've killed. Made me laugh anyway.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Finished "Curse of the Mistwraigh re-read", onto "Ships of Merior". Unlike Book 1, this one I barely remember, so it's almost like reading it for the first time.

Looking into doing this myself next year. I read the latest when it came out, but the vast majority of it was read around seven years ago for me. It was pretty much the first epic fantasy that I really involved myself into so I have some warm fuzzy memories involved. Anyways, would you keep the thoughts on this re-read coming? I'm very interested to impressions that come from this re-read.

Finished "Ships of Merior". enjoyed it quite a lot. A lot of poetic irony in this series. The whole "feelings v thoughts" thing I've alluded to earlier works here, but that's because the series uses hatred as a major plot device. The story developed at a decent pace, and overall, the progression of every character's development made sense.

On to "Warhost of Vastmark" next....

Yeah I read one of his reviews once and it was full of spoilers.... Not really sure why a review needs to have spoilers.

It would appear as if Anthony Ryan's BLOOD SONG threw me into an unexpected Book Hangover, as I've tried to get into both KINSLAYER by Kristoff, and even THE CRYSTAL SHARD by Salvatore (for light fluff fantasy fare) and nada.

Hmmm...choosing a book to remedy this is going to be difficult.
