Finished Light in August, really liked it but not quite as much as TS&TF. Faulkner is absolutely fantastic with characters who have mental illnesses though.

Now onto The Scar, and I'm actually feeling pretty excited.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Decided to delay starting the new Sullivan and take a trip back to Balaia with Barclay's NOONSHADE...which so far is scratching my classical fantasy itch.

It's a notch better than bk 1, particularly due to certain additions to the cast who more or less steal the book.

Mieville's The Scar or the Dyachenkos' ?

I'm about midway through The Coldest War - great stuff. Also about midway through American Gods; can't believe how much I'd forgotten, though I guess a decade will do that to you. Also just starting Tyrant's Law; I'm excited for this as Abraham's works are top notch stuff.

So I finished the Long Earth by Pratchett and Baxter. I quite enjoyed it, and have to wonder why it hasn't received more attention.

I have begun my first real reread of the main sequence malazan series. I was halfway through Deadhouse gates when I realized I had to read Garden of the moon first. Silly me. I think it's a brainfart brought forth by the fact that I got DHG before Garden.

But it'll be okay, I'll finish Deadhouse and then read Garden, that'll work.
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Read basically the middle third of Emperor of Thorns last night. So good.

I have a conundrum! I just found out I won an advance copy of Donaldson's The Last Dark to review. Now, I own all of the previous Covenant books, but have not read the most recent two; I've been planning on doing a full series reread leading up to TLD for a while now, but now I wonder if maybe I should just go with the Last Chronicles? (And I still need to finish Ricardo Pinto's The Third God and catch up with TtH for the Tor.com reread...)
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Has anyone read the Shadow Ops books "Control Point" and "Fortress Frontier" by Myke Cole? And if so, are they worth investing money in?

I read CONTROL POINT.

It's...good. It's not great by any stretch, but it's solid portal / urban fantasy.

It's what you'd get if the Auror's in Harry Potter were VERY strictly controlled by the government, and their military arm (who employ magic users) sought out ALL civilian magic users to be categorized, tagged, and watched (with some forms of magic being outlawed totally)...and then a few Auror's realize that things aren't as hunky dory in the magical military establishment as previous thought and things go off in the "rogue elements uniting" direction.

What it does well are:

The military terminology and activities ect. are all handled perfectly as Cole himself is in the American military. Ooorah. 'murica.

The diversity of the main characters is not often seen in this type of fantasy, and Cole gets a five by five on that count.

The final act is pretty well plotted and achieved (if cliffhangery), and made me want to read the sequel...which I've not read yet.

Give it a go, it's a pretty good debut, and it's probably on par with other starter UF books for quality.

Just finished Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone. It's a strange combo of urban fantasy / legal fantasy / with a tinge of steampunk thrown in. I thought the worldbuilding was excellent, though some of the other aspects could have been done better. Overall, it was a promising debut.

Now onto Jack McDevitt's The Engines of God, as I have heard it has a lot to do with archaeology and that exactly what I am in the mood to read.

Just finished the Prince of Nothing trilogy. Super good! Looking forward to moving on to Bakker's next one, but might wait a while for that.

Finished The Quantum Thief, which was great, and I've ordered The Fractal Prince.

Finally got around to starting the Tales of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach!

Have been struggling with Bernard Cornwell's Agincourt for 2 weeks now. Maybe just give it a break and reread the Tales of Bacuhelain and Broach.

While being a fairly good look at the battle, it's certainly not got the same charm as his Series books. The lead in AGINCOURT is not remotely interesting. It's a good book, but I found long portions of it a slog as well, not to worry, you're not alone.

I thought Agincourt was pretty much shit. As my first introduction to Cornwell, it wasn't encouraging. I will be reading some of his other stuff at some stage, though.

Nights of Villjamur. Surprisingly good so far. I'm only reading it because I won it from Pat a few years ago and I'm really enjoying it 1/4 of the way through. Interesting world and story--kinda reminds me of the Dagger & Coin.
