Started into THE GOLEM & THE DJINNI by Helen Wecker. So far it's quite engrossing! The story of an abandoned female golem and a lost and time displaced Djinn in turn of the century New York.

The Lord of the Rings for the first time in 10 or 11 years.

The Wheel of Time hardcovers on my bookshelf keep looking at me...sooner or later I'm going to have to start reading book six and power through the rest of the series. Kind of silly to own all fifteen books in hardcover (New Spring included) otherwise.

Swords & Dark Magic anthology. SE was just perfect, Cook as well, but after that it's so far hit-and-miss, but I've come to expect that with anthologies.

The two other best tales in that volume are the Scott Lynch Library one "IN THE STACKS", and Joe Abercrombie's quasi-prequel to THE HEROES "THE FOOL JOBS".

Yah, it's the nature of the beast, but I actually really liked the Greg Keyes entry in this as well...first time seeing his Fool Wolf character, and it was one of the more engaging stories from start to finish.

Yah I like him okay, but I really liked that short story for some reason. I heard there's a compilation of Fool Wolf stories out there, but it's apparently one of the most shoddily edited books in history.

Just finished read Hyperion and really enjoyed it. Though I dunno if anyone else thought this but I felt that the flashback stories that they tell were much stronger & better written than the inbetween bits. I know that's pretty much the point but even the ending where the traitor is revealed etc seemed very rushed & not really thought through...
Edit: am now going to read the next book, The Fall of Hyperion...

Started Abercrombie's Best Served Cold. Got 50 pages in.. think I might just give up on Abercrombie all together. Not a bad writer or anything, I just don't find his books to be that interesting.

I'm guessing the girl in BSC ends up killing all of the people she wants to kill and that's pretty much how the book ends. Is that correct?

Going to start on the DS9 relaunch books.. see how those are.

Nobody in any Abercrombie book gets what they want exactly how they want it. It's like he's purposely given everybody a monkey's paw that puts them through hell before any dubious reward comes.

Have you read The Count of Monte Christo ? If yes, then consider that "the trope". Then invert it, twist it, and smother it with a grey and black morality.

Abercrombie isn't my favourite writer, in fact some things he does really irritate me, but I will never call him predictable" or "bland". And BSC was goood.

I loved BSC but it took at least 50-100 pages for me to get into it. But if you didn't like his trilogy then Abercrombie probably isn't for you.

Almost done with The Heroes and it's almost as great as BSC.

Abercrombie's best book is Red Country. He made a very odd concept work (fantasy Western) and work so well that it might be the third best Western book I've read (Lonesome Dove and Blood Meridian being the other two). It's very, very well done and the strength of writing bodes well for his future books.

While I was enjoying it, I've put down the slow burn that is THE GOLEM & THE DJINNI for now, to focus on some epic fantasy...so I've started FORTRESS DRACONIS by Stackpole.

To be fair, it's not that odd. It was one of three just last year. They were less common before that, but The Dark Tower's been around for aaaaaaaages.

Bloody good book though, Red Country, even though I prefer The Heroes.

Okay, so 40 pages of FORTRESS DRACONIS was enough for me.

I think young QT may have enjoyed this book circa-Dragonlance era reading....but I think that adult post-Malazan, Post-ASOIAF QT finds it to be...err generic. The action scene's are just fine, but the in between stuff is plodding, and the characters are flat.

Also, the one big elf guy is called "Resolute" and he's ...er....resolute. Clever naming?

I dunno, I wanted to give it a shot, the the trip in to work this morning showed me it may not be for me.

You should try The Whitefire Crossing and the sequel, by Courtney Schafer. Proper old-school epic fantasy trappings, used to tell a brilliant thriller. If you can still get it - it's a NightShade Books publication, which means it may have been pulled from shelves until they're all sorted out. Thankfully though the as yet unpublished third book isn't owned by them (they only had an option), so won't get caught up in the rights wrangle.

Also if it's available where you are The Grim Company by Luke Scull for something like an Abercrombie/Erikson combo (it's not quite as good as either yet, but it is very good nonetheless). I'm not sure when the Canadese date is.
