So in a scene Gruntle and the Bole brothers find Glanno Tarp lying in a corral. Then Gruntle finds Cartographer and the undead tell him "It's the jam-smeared bread thing, isn't it?"

What does sthi jam smeared-bread statement mean? I'm guessing it's a figure of speech but I'm not sure. Does anyone know?
