Taken from the 2020 thread:

View PostMentalist, on 04 January 2020 - 04:33 AM, said:

Last year I ended up not making any, and it was... an alright year. Not particularly exciting, but nothing really bad, either.

I'll probably add to this when I think about it some more, but here's a starter:

Money/Financial- 2019 was actually kinda good with this. I got rid of my student loan, and the only other excessive debt is the money I borrowed from my parents for down payment on my flat. (not counting the mortgage itself, cuz that's just a fact of life). I didn't spend nearly as much on travel and books.... but I spent a ton on games, and also I built a new PC.

So basic goals for 2020:
-limit my spendings on personal entertainment (books and games) to under $250/month
-Maintain a balance above 10K by end of year, while increasing the money I'm paying back on the loan.
-I'm planning a vacation trip for September, and I want to have about 3-4 K set aside for that.

Health- towards the end of the year I REALLY slacked off on this, due to combination of work and dealing with the condo/tenants

Basic goal is:
-lose weight again, get back into the regular weight range of 81-83 kilos
-resume swimming twice a week
-exercise every morning
-get back to proper sleep patterns- go to bed no later than 1 AM on a weekday, and shut the computer down at 11:30 on a weekday

Leisure
-Stop buying so many games; play more of the games I own
-Read all the books I have at home and buy less books until I do
-improve my passing with the left foot and participate in meaningful offensive plays at least 3 times per game.

Suffice it to say, 202o was a bit of a mess in most aspects. No social life, excessive leisure spending, and some... interesting financial decisions (we bought into a pre-built house project) mean that things have not been going according to plan.

Add to this my tenants informing me they're definitely moving out, and prospect of renovation spending, and life isn't looking so rosy.

Basically, the first 6 months are gonna be financially rough, because I need to shell out a bunch of cash for repairs (and paying condo fees& mortgage until I can rent the place out), on top of paying my annual license fees and coming up with another chunk of the house deposit by late April.

So, in the spirit of financial planning

No spending on games and books (other than thru gift cards) for the first 6 months of the year

The only personal spending budget I'm allowing myself is paying for pool time (once those re-open), because that is very much my sanity/Zen time.

-Ideally, I still wanna have 3-4K banked away as vacation fund by end of the year- I have a decent chunk now, but I'll be dipping into that for the next while.

Since we are communally building up a downpayment fund, my goal is still to put at least 12k into that- the original plan was 20k this year, but that feels less feasible RN.

Having social life be on hold should be beneficial to the financial stuff, so not planning on resuming living anytime soon.

-really need to start exercising in the morning again, and, relatedly, going to bed at a decent hour.

For me and wifey

1 - GET THAT FUCKING DRIVING RANGE OPEN.
2 - Buy a house to let out
3 - get the vegetable garden going and grow our own stuff
4 - restrictions permitting, get across the water to see friends and Family more.

For me

1 - Ze German again
2 - fitness and flexibility (I am so unbendy it's disgraceful)
3 - save some money
4 - do some writing
5 - make and sell a piece of furniture to a stranger (the bar was paid work, but was for a friend and realistically I didn't make much per hour for my work)

1. Read 12+ books (my 2020 count was embarrassingly small, even with the pandemic/lockdown)
2. Write 20,000 words in some creative writing project (or two)
3. Go skiing/snowshoeing more - at least 25 times (can't procrastinate this one until summer!)
4. Don't buy any plants

I want to get fitter again. Knee problems have meant I haven't done as much as running as I would have liked, and moving house, an increasingly stressful job and general laziness have all but banged the last nail in the coffin.

I had determined to go to Parkrun this week and of course a lockdown was reintroduced on the Island so that plan is off.

Oh well. I live close enough to work to walk it so I think I'll be doing that more often.

Wouldn't 3 for you be precluded by 1 and 2 for you and Her Indoors?

I resolve nothing as I know myself too well. If I get anything done this year besides the minimum required I'll consider it a nice bonus.

Peaking early is kinda your thing isn't it ... ?

;)

I on the other hand am a paragon of continuous underachievement. Or I have maxxed out, depending on what you think my potential is.

Mine is fairly straight forwards:

Build up a gym routine again, once the gyms open.
Get the boardgame group up and running again, as soon as we're allowed too,
Keep up painting miniatures (as a hobby it has done wonders for my mental health)
Keep meditating
Keep doing yoga.

Your whole life plays to an Enya soundtrack, so that's hardly surprising.

Nearly half way into the year, driving range will be open this year.
The buying property we are in a position to do but waiting for the market to cool a bit
We have a veggie garden and greenhouse going, food is growing and we use our own grown lettuce and radishes in salads so far, but a lot of other stuff planted
Restrictions are being lifted and we do intend some small travel to see friends

For me

German slack so far
Fitness no
Saving money no
Writing not really
But the furniture bit is done!

Now that the festive period is rolling in and 2021 is drawing to a close how was this year for you all?

Looking at my list:

For me and wifey

1 - GET THAT FUCKING DRIVING RANGE OPEN. - Done!
2 - Buy a house to let out - this was insanity to suggest, nope
3 - get the vegetable garden going and grow our own stuff - yep yep, a decent haul of veg
4 - restrictions permitting, get across the water to see friends and Family more. - sort of yes, a wedding and a trip around England seeing friends and family

For me

1 - Ze German again - eh, not really
2 - fitness and flexibility (I am so unbendy it's disgraceful) - hell no
3 - save some money - hahahaha, oh I'm so funny
4 - do some writing - nooooooooooppe
5 - make and sell a piece of furniture to a stranger (the bar was paid work, but was for a friend and realistically I didn't make much per hour for my work) - yes, and it's beautiful

Out of all of these, I got the Gym routine up and running again when they opened up again back in september. Which is also about the time we got the boardgame group up and running again too.

Alas, Yoga, meditation and painting fell to the wayside, mostly I think because of how the new apartment stole all my time. I'll have to transfer them for next year.

Moving furniture around is a kind of yoga, anyways.

I only reached 10 books so I failed 3 out of 4, yikes.
