Peace Talks is out tomorrow and forum members have already received copies, so here's a dedicated spoiler free thread.

If you want to talk about spoilers please put them in a black box and write what page or chapter you're spoiler boxing, so us slow but morbidly curious readers know what boxes it's safe to take a peek at.

Here's the book description for Jim Butcher's Dresden Files book 16:

Quote

ABOUT PEACE TALKS
HARRY DRESDEN IS BACK AND READY FOR ACTION, in the new entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files.

When the Supernatural nations of the world meet up to negotiate an end to ongoing hostilities, Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard, joins the White Council’s security team to make sure the talks stay civil. But can he succeed, when dark political manipulations threaten the very existence of Chicago—and all he holds dear?

I know we are due a second Dresden book in September but this seems a short book at 352 pages... unless the font is small and they've crammed more words in to it. They originally said Peace Talks before the split was around 400,000 words. I guess we'll see.

Only Storm Front has less pages... still cannot wait!!

I've took Wednesday off work to enjoy some peaceful reading.

I'm guessing Butcher didn't realize how expensive a mansion made out of solid gold is and decided to split the book for maximum profit.

Well, it has been six years since the last Dresden book haha, needs to get those spondoolies coming in again.

There was an interview where he said that if it was published as one hardback book it would be a $50-$60 book. But Sanderson has released some serious lumps lately so aye, who knows.

I enjoyed it. It's definitely more of a part one than the other books, I really want to read battlegrounds now!

Just finished Chapter 1.

It's amazing how you start the first page and realize that you've forgotten everything and simultaneously info start bubbling up from your memory. This will probably the first book where I appreciate Butcher's strategy of reintroducing and summarising past books events again and again.

Great setup for the book. As always, Butcher's strength is the relationships he builds between characters. I love the interaction between the two brothers and then Ramirez.

Also damn scary that Dresden is doing a 6 mile run with 220 pounds/100 kgs strapped to him. Dude's strong now.

Just finished, it only took a few hours.

Agree it is good probably better than the Dresden Files have been for a few installments. At the same time it is half a book, I'd rather have had a seven hundred page tome, than part two in two months. :D

Agree, rattling through the series used to highlight all the repetition and recaps - now I'm just appreciating them. I feel kind of bad not having a bit of a reread before jumping in, but I'm already doing one of those. I like all the familiar introductions and scene setting too.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I've seen a couple of people say that at least 1 story in Brief Cases is important in Peace Talks, so you may want to read that if you haven't.

I heard that earlier but annoyingly they never said which one... I need to read Brief Cases too.

It certainly helps to have read the Sasquatch stories in Brief Cases. But it's more important to have read the last main series book.

I forgot what happened to Bob. I forgot why Maggie is living with Harry. I forgot what happened to Molly. I have no idea what happened to the Carpenters. What on earth happened to Murphy? When did they fight Nicodemas?

I really should do a re-read. I think that will be a 2022 project.

P. 48.

Another confrontation with cops where Dresden states it's just too hard to make cops believe in magic and bla bla so it's better to keep them out of the loop. Creating unnecessary tension.

It's such a weak plot cop out I really wish Butcher would come up with something better than this.
