What's the relationship between the two? Are they two names for the same thing, are they different? Can anyone answer this for me?
Cheers.

Elder Gods are gods who were worshipped during the Elder Times. Some of those Elder Gods are Azathanai but not necessarily all of them.

The Azathanai were a powerful elder race and several of them were worshipped by other races. Those became Elder Gods. But, as Apt wrote, not all Elder Gods were Azathanai :)

Though they say if you find an Elder God that isn't an Azathanai, just wait for Erikson to write another book or two and they'll become one :p

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

No, not quite I think. The Azathanai seem unique in that they are more or less fully formed god's who walked out of Chaos and assumed new aspects. They're born/created/were always super powerful.

Ascendants on the other hand are beings who ascend by transcending their mortal/semi-mortal limits. Both Azathanai and Ascendants can become gods through worship but my gut feeling is that you really don't want to fuck with beings that are born out of Chaos. God or not.

Many Azathanai at some point became Elder Gods, but not all Azathanai did so, and some Elder Gods to the best of current knowledge were not Azathanai.

At least from what I can tell, the Azathanai as a race seem to have inherent powerful magical abilities and are long lived, making it more likely for them to become gods.
Laseen did nothing wrong.

I demand Telorast & Curdle plushies.

Sorry, I never noticed the replies to my reply.

What I means was same as modern day gods/ascendants in that all gods are ascendants but not all ascendants are gods...?

At least that's what I think I meant. It's been months and I forgot all about that post.

Yes, in a sense. Gods are ascendants who are worshipped. Elder gods are Azathanai who are worshipped.

But you can ascend and you cannot become an Azathanai.
