I think what's dangerous is to read the headline of articles without context. Typically the actual article is a bit more complicated.

We are starting to trend better in my province (and country really), with only a reported 251 cases here today, and only 98 of those in the hot spot that is Toronto proper. Hospitalizations are down a bit too, and Intensive Care is stable as well.

With most of the province (minus what is called the Golden Horseshoe, which I am in) heading into Phase 2 this Friday, we SEEM to be headed in the right direction.

People are still fucking things up at the government level mind you...like our Education minister is a fucking dumpster fire, for example and is bungling the Daycare reopening rollout...but otherwise we are doing not too bad.

If we continue to trend this way, I could see Phase 3 happening by Fall...and from what I understand Phase 3 will see us returning to work on the regular, as opposed to Working From home.

It seems like the worry about community transmission spike from Trinity Bellwoods a few weeks back didn't materialize into many new cases, which is lucky. DAMNED lucky.

We're not New Zealand, but we seem to be pointed in that general direction, so that is good.

It makes me feel mildly good about this whole thing for the first time in months.

Pfff, I probably shpuldnt say this, but for the only Government backed national vaccine study in the public domain, this Oxford trial is pretty amateurish in its setup.

I am spending 90% of the time filling out bloody Excel spreadsheets which dont even autofill the trial date when you scan the participant samples. My wife could have put together a more cohesive and user-friendly database in 5 minutes. And we already ran out of the cryovials and vaccine that they provided us with, because they are so stingy that they give you exactly the amount of stuff that you need for your bit of the study with no room for error whatsoever.

Considering that the Government has already pledged to buy 30 million vaccines if it is shown to work, you would think they would have put a few more resources to this trial than some hapless volunteers like myself doing 10 hour days with inadequate supplies. Fuck me.

Tell me about it. For some of the other Covid trial work that we are involved with we have a proper electronic database. You'd think that for a study of this magnitude and impact, they would have prepared something similar. But nope, it's two Excel spreadsheets. One for sample entries, one for aliquot management. Jesus wept. I guess they figured that with multiple sites contributing, it might be a bit time consuming to train people up in the use of specialist databases, but still. I'm frantically making regular backups, so that we aren't massively in the dumps if someone buggers up the spreadsheet.

Good idea to keep your own back-up's of the Excel ark but if this is your standard cloud based setup, you should be able to go back to older versions of the document using history. You can even keep track of who has accessed it the past days, weeks, months and pinpoint who the idiot is who accidentally overwrote two hundred entries with the word "hdqøælo".
