I believe they've already announced a second trilogy of pre/early empire books. Or at least more books on the same setting.

He is working on a second trilogy according to Steven Erikson

As it turned out, for many readers, even that wasn’t enough background or gaps filled. But no matter what I did with that particular novel, the backstory was always going to be huge, and could only be hinted at (Cam Esslemont is right now in the process of filling in that backstory, with one trilogy done and another on the way).

Does anyone know any details on what ICE's new trilogy will be about?

Google the Jhistal. There's very little info beyond a title and publication date so far as far as I know.

The Jhistal - book 1 of the next Trilogy is a follow on from the Ascendency trilogy I believe... so maybe a backround story on Mellick Rel and Mael .
Release date Nov 2020

In the new (July 2020) TSACAST podcast interview with Esslemont and Erikson, ICE talks about his upcoming work around 28 minutes in:
1. The Jhistal is the first of three new books in the Path to Ascendancy series with a possible 3 more to follow.
2. It will take place a couple of decades after Kellanved's Reach and involves the Falaran archipelago--its cultural backgrounds, its traditions, its people.
3. He hopes to eventually write about the Northern Genabackan campaigns (Blackdog, Mott Wood, etc.)
4. He's unaware of whatever publishing date is up for the book on Amazon.
5. It sounds like the book following The Jhistal will cover the first Malazan landings on Seven Cities and will center on the fall of Aren and the 'infamous slaughter" by the T'lan Imass there.

Cautiously optimistic.

I'm guessing it's getting bumped to 2021 because of the coronavirus or other factors we're unaware of. It no longer appears for pre-order in Amazon US and it dropped off the publisher's website a few months ago. Back in July, ICE said he didn't know when the book was being published, but was contracted for three new books (including The Jhistal) with the possibility of three more. Sales have been good on the Path to Ascendancy series per Erikson.
