Don't have much confidence in the US Mens basketball team. They really tanked in the worlds. Atleast the women are a bright spot :-)

Are there any different/new sports this year?

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Here's a slightly serious turn: How about a return to "Altius, celeritus, fortius"? Get rid of judged sports and watch the corrupt judging get wiped out.

Can't do much about the drugs though I'm afraid. Sport these days is more lab vs lab than athlete vs athlete.

No, but I'd love a way to catch every doping athlete out there.

Wouldn't be too many of the high fliers left

I don't know if there are cases where people only compete in the Olympics but most athletes have regional, national, continental, world championships that they compete in year round.

The Olympics are important but there's a lot of other contests out there.

And these will be shut down as well. Witness all major sporting codes at the moment.

Looks like it's all going down the toilet in the last week before commencing.
Positive tests coming up everywhere, no fans ... I hope I'm not tempting fate here but - can it get any worse?

Oh great, and now if a big Godzilla doesn't light the fucking torch with his atomic breath, I'm going to be super disappointed.

Although I too love the concept and normally would have been giddy with anticipation, I guess it would be a bit poor form by the opening ceremony organisers to start these Olympics off with another natural disaster, with Covid quite rampant still globally. although it would be a fitting visual meme for these Games.

Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

I always feel sorry for the countries that enter in the ceremony with like one or two athletes. It must be weird seeing the likes of the USA coming on with hundreds of people and then it's just, like, you... I know they must be hugely popular in their home countries due to the fact that they just got there in the first place, and well done to them! Still, strange...

They should have taken my offer to run the games. The orbital heat ray relay would have been breathtaking.

...honestly who the fuck has animal safety concerns about komodo dragons...? ...worry about the swimmers you morons, that's the entire point of the event!....

Counterpoint... when those countries' athletes win, for maybe 24hours, the Games actually have a purpose.

Opening ceremony tonight and I can't wait to see it. Hoping for a cool show with the projector tech they've done since Sochi in 2014.

Hoping for 'Catzilla saves in-person athletic competitions from Coronazilla'.

(OTOH now I'm wondering why more Olympic events can't be socially distanced... the non-team, non-head-to-head competition ones at least. Too difficult to make two race tracks sufficiently identical?)
