Today begins the last week of our three week read of Ursula K LeGuin's The Left Hand of Darkness.

This week we'll be reading from roughly pages 200-308 or what ever fits your chapter breaks.

As always let's be careful of spoilers and keep the discussion on this week's content or what we read last week.

I haven't read more than a hundred pages so far. It's video game season and all my time has been consumed by Zelda and Destiny. Don't think I'll get around to finishing Left Hand this month.

This also means I'm bowing out of the Book Club the next few months. If anyone wants to continue you're welcome to pick up the reins and select a new book to read.

I've finished this book. Loved it. There was a lot going on in these relatively few pages but it was an enjoyable and thought provoking story. Glad I read it!

Just finished it.

I didn't like this book at the start, it grew on me as it went along.
At it base level it's an anti nationalism book? Not nationalism in the Nazi sense of the word, just national pride and the slope it is that can easily lead into otherism and can be a tool to manipulate the masses.
Also I suppose a light against both hereditary rule (base.monarchism) and in the other extreme what communism turned into in Russia. The outlying Hearths in Khardish communities seemed to be the standard LeGuin would like to see people live in, kind, giving and compassionate. But also the treachery at the end unlines mankind's failings, fear and greed.

Phew, I dunno, it was a strange book all in all but when it picked up at the midpoint I kept turning pages. Glad I read it, as it's held up as a classic in the genre, but don't see me rereading it.

What's next kids?

I'm the wrong person to take charge, with work etc I.dont think I've kept with one target yet, but I like the idea

Yes I enjoyed it more as it went along. There was a lot to unpack in it both about national politics and also gender/sexuality/identity. The strongest point was definitely the world building, I felt very drawn in by it all.
