Would you guys recommend reading Gideon again before Harrow?

Reco, yes.
Essential, no.
You may find it handy to check the cast list from GIDEON to remind yourself who some names from that book were.

I read the Tor.com re-read to refresh my memory.
I had a quick look at this last night, thanks for the recommend, even without needing the knowledge it looks to be a good read/well written...

I really enjoyed the book so I think I'll give it a reread first, it's always better going into a new book with refreshed knowledge.
I'll follow along with the Tor reread too... thanks for the feedback.

I'd forgotten enough about this I had to go back and read gideon, which definitely holds up on the reread.
Harrow was quite different but retains the weirdness and humour very well and the mystery of what is going on really hooked me.
I'm extremely intrigued about the next book and the history of this world. Recommended!

Kobo finally got audiology version today. Up to Chapter 6...
Liking the change in tense and how clearly the fundamental mysteries are being set up, and more of the world being revealed.

I am hoping people who did not love book one will still give book two a try. It really opens up the world, and is a different storytelling style. I really believe that people who just felt sort of "meh" on book one will find more to like in this one, but I loved both.

I think the people who did not love the first will have the same things to criticize again. There's pop culture references, there's crude moments, and the space stuff isn't that expanded on.
But this book is still fecken brilliant. I'm so glad I sprung for the special edition black edges.

The conceit of this book, without going into spoilers, is grating on me. I'm roughly halfway through, and the chapters that take place in the "alternate" past feel utterly pointless and dragged out. To be honest it feels like padding. I see nothing lost by skipping them in their entirety so far as I am pretty sure of where they'll lead, though I do read them in some vague hope that there'll be more of a point to it.

I have looked for black out edition. No luck and I can’t say I enjoyed Gideon in the end so if I can’t get blackout I’m out. Looked in TX at a Barnes n Noble, tired to get my brother in H town and his woman to go look in stores but they fucking didn’t. So I ll make the same offer here I made them: if anyone finds a blackout in store and gets it and ships it to me I will work out something through a gift card to send or text to whoever. If it’s the normal price of a hardcover. Not paying that $60 money grab bullshit.
Got a hurricane to deal with now though so I suspect I can’t get right on that either way.

This $60 offering is the cheapest I can find in the US online. https://mikescollect...ck-sprayed-edge
If you call around, you might be able to get one for a regular book price, but these black edge books sold super fast. There may be more printings with black edges, but that may take a while.
Salt-Man Z may have enough juice to find one offline for cheaper. Reach out to him. He got me my Gideon edition.

I loved Harrow and I loved it a lot more than Gideon. Its a more complex book and I can't wait to reread both books back to back. I think I might do that when book 3 comes out
