I'm not on Facebook, but some folks I follow on Twitter are reporting that Dan Simmons has had a little "moment", posting some criticism of Greta Thunberg on his page. I'd be interested to know the crux of his diatribe/rant/grumble if anybody could share.

Never mind; I found some excerpts on Twitter. Generally, he didn't like being shouted at by a "bratty" teenage girl who "knows nothing about climate or climate change or science".

EDIT: Here's the post in full. Greta, Simmons says, has been a naughty little girl who should be put in the time-out corner where she can think about the way she talks to adults.

SFF author Neal Asher also has asinine opinions about climate change...and like Simmons has likely spouted off about Greta.

As someone said on Twitter.

Teen advocate: “Hey, why don’t we try to make the world a little better and help the environment for everyone’s sake.”
Adults: I must verbally attack this child.

You know you’ve sacred the shit out of old conservative white men in power when they attack you for daring to suggest we stop being so wasteful and destructive as a society.

The good news. these Boomer assholes are late stage life, so as long as Greta’s generation keeps fighting and those of us who can help in that fight do so...Boomer dickweeds like Simmons and Asher will be a footnote next to the word stupidity in some history book, nothing more.

Dan Simmons has been that way for a long time, but I didn't know that Asher was one of those twats too.

Other way around for me. I knew Asher was a climate change denier, but I didn't know about Simmons.

Simmons also has a really egregious history of racism, xenophobia, and other alt-right opinions that he's been quite un-shy about sharing for the last decade or so.

Yeah, I just found out after this recent post. I read Hyperion second hand from a used book store and enjoyed it, but that post is fucked.

So, pretty disappointing. Always sucks when somebody got to be out there being a trash bag. Guess I'm going to stop talking about his book, alas.

The rants make certain things in Hyperion, Ilium, and Olympos fall into an awful puzzle scene. I am never giving him money again even though I thought The Terror was an amazing book.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I've since learned about this, but before his attack on Greta I had no idea, none whatsoever. Fortunately, I have no real interest in his work, so I needn't worry about trying to justify reading it.

What things are those? Just curious, always been a huge fan of Hyperion, but I heard before about Simmons' views, they sound very far away from my own.

Hearing this stuff about Simmons is disappointing. I consider the Hyperion Cantos up there with the best books I've ever read.

Asher's a bit of a wonk but unless he's advocated for genocide of the entire Islamic world him and Simmons aren't in the same league of twattery to be fair.

Yes, as far as I know Asher's just a climate change denier...but he's a HUGE asshole about it.

Read the Hyperion Cantos. It's outstanding litterature. Olympus and Illisium aren't bad either if you're into Shakespeare and the Illiad.

Same/same.
Unfortunate Simmons decided to let his inside voice out.

Part of me wants to reread HYPERION then proceed to the sequel series.
Part of me wants to just cherish the memory and not risk it.

...see this, THIS is why cloning was invented....
