What's you favorite performances of Hauer?

Blade Runner performance. It has to be one of the most chilling performances by an actor captured on film. No special effects or CGI required. Just intensity piled on top of intensity. Those piercing blue eyes . .. fucking brilliant . Right up there with Brando's Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now.

Another great performance is The Hitcher. If you haven't seen it, look for it and make it a priority to watch it. Also Nighthawks with Sylvester Stallone is excellent.

To me Hauer is one of those actors whose more of an attraction, a charismatic character, than necessary a great actor. As such while I'd say I always enjoy seeing him on screen I'd say he's been in his fair share of weird to terrible films.

By the time he got to True Blood, it was already dead. But it wasn't his fault. That reminds me though...he's in the weirdest, least good season of Channel Zero (S3 -- which has plenty of good individual ideas but doesn't fully gel) and his performance is fantastic. I'd describe it as load-bearing.

Hands down the greatest Dutch actor ever. Truly saddened to hear it, he was a huge idol for me and my mates. So many epic rolls, and some pretty shitty ones as well. Roy Batty is of course the role that cemented him forever, but Soldaat van Oranje and Turks Fruit are awesome as well. Turks Fruit definitely nsfw 😁

But also the Hitcher, Ladyhawke, blind fury and flesh & blood. The guy did fantasy before fantasy was a thing. Split second is also a cult recommendation. Rutger is the bloody king of kult. Always a legend.

Flesh+Blood definitely fits that bill (weird to terrible). I 'watched' it late night once on premium cable package that airs these types of movies over night in the wee hours of the morning. After coming home drunk from carousing the local scene with some friends, in my half drunk, dazed, partially falling asleep state on the couch, I would look up every now and again and try and figure out just what in the hell I was watching.

I always enjoyed Rutger Hauer's work. His movies may not have been the best, but he always personally delivered. It's too bad.

I remember this, as I was a big fan of the books at the time, and the Tim Cruise choice was... weird.

What the heck happened to Split Second, anyway? I haven't seen it appear anywhere since I saw it on release. I used to get some horror movie magazine and I recall being quite hyped for it at the time.
Even Ladyhawke still appears on some channels at the moment - I've not seen Split Second even referred to since it came out.

Me too, came to it for similar reasons but I genuinely just really like the film now too. He made a great cameo appearance in the first series of The Last Kingdom (as Ravn - "never fight Ubba"), but the first time I saw him in anything was as King Vortigern in Merlin ("My enemies think before they act, I act before I think!") and I have an enduring soft spot for it.

It's a tedious film with great scenes that look good in retrospect but actually it's just an animated sleeping pill.
