I'm just starting NoK after having finished the main series and I was confused on the general timeline of the Malazan empire. The first part starts with "96th Year of the Malazan Empire" at the top and I'm wondering how Kellanved could still be alive after 96 years, and why people act as if his return would be a normal thing, ie like someone returning from a long vacation. Does this have to do with his travels through the Azath by means of the Deadhouse?

Also, mages are known to have longer lifespans, because magic.

Even just "ordinary" mages can live a veeeery long time. Tattersail is over 200 years old in Gardens of the Moon. Top-tier mages, Ascendants, and others with greater access to magic can live for millenia... though a powerful reputation might make you more enemies and therefore more likely to suffer a "non-natural" death well before millenia have passed.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Tattersail was not ordinary. Her descriptions depict someone of great prowess.
