I never did quite understand why the coin bearer had to be protected.
And why by K'azz D'Avore?
Can anyone care to explain?

The Crimson Guard are working for Caladan Brood. Brood is worried that Anomander Rake, who doesn't like Oponn, will try to get hold of the coin and pull in the Twins to use Dragnipur on them. This would cause immense chaos. So he sent in the CG to protect Crokus. We learn this from a conversation that Brood has with Crone.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.
