Did some more grinding in Hirata. Bought everything of significance from the first 3 merchants. Had a couple of cheap deaths while grinding when I'd dodge a mob into a wall and take a few hits. Feels just like any other action/adventure game in that regard, TBH.

Cheers for that tip about the chest in the rafters, Trav, that's really handy!

Need to focus so that I can kill the beastie guarding castle access. I'm having some trouble rolling out of his way as I haven't memorized his attack pattern yet . That'll be the goal for tomorrow.

I went back to the valley to kill the miniboss with the gun to get another prayer bead. Finally got him using my freshly upgraded firecrackers and shadowrush; but like so many bosses it's not the fight that's annoying, it's having to grapple jump 3 platforms while being shot at just to get there.

Since I last tried Ashina I have 3 more beads, just need to find another mini boss somewhere or a chest to power up a bit more. Lots of weird centipede priests up where I am now, got to be something around here.

Hit a wall with Ashina though; not through not knowing his moves and the responses, but just not being able to put it all together every time. And you have to get it right, for 3 phases, with hardly any chances to heal without being shot.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

It makes me feel stupid as fuck.

I'm still in the early stages of learning him, but I suspect you have to use the starter Shinobi skill where you use the firecracker prosthetic and immediately follow up with a strike.

Imma practice that move on the dummy tonight before going for the beastie again.

Edit: I'll have to try using the extra damage candy, too.

I spent ages chasing him about and getting hit.

Then I hit his head. So, firecracker him, he rears. Hold down r1 - he lands.. charged stab his head. He gets stunned, I just repeatedly mashed r1 at that point on his rear until death blow.

Killed another Centipede mini boss - 4th prayer bead, so I've now got even better vitality.

Also unlocked Ishimondo Double - as it apparently resets your posture when you use it, which will be hopefully useful against Genchiro.

Which is a bummer, because I have nowhere else to go now, which means I have to go and face him again..

Got him on my 3rd try.

BK, unlock the starter Shinobi skill and practice it on the dummy- use fireworks and then tap strike right away to close up on the bull and keep hitting him. Don't forget to dodge.

Yeah, BK. Just do what Mentalist says. Just dodge and hit him. It's really easy.

There are some really useful latent skills that are worth picking up early.

The Ashina skill tree has both ascending and descending carp, and Flowing Water - which decreases the posture you lose when deflecting sword blows. Really useful against bosses.

Killed the Drunk as well. But the next Hirata boss is owning me.

I'm one bead away from an upgrade... trying to kill the Spear general. I figured out how to sneak up on him, now I just gotta figure out the attacks on that spear...

I think I lured him to the building doorway, threw oil on him and set him on fire. But then I remember getting into a cycle of hit/dodge behind him/hit again which he was unable to get out of?

I haven't unlocked the Ashina tree yet. Do I need to

to unlock that tree? (Just give me a yes or no answer. If not, I'll keep exploring).

Fuck me, I finally got him.

That was... something of an effort.

3rd phase wasn't so bad when I just got in close, he didn't even get a chance to use his lightning from that range. The power ups and extra vitality helped.

Nice! There's a trader with a bead in the castle!

Oh, and a creepy dungeon... interesting.

Edit: congrats, BK! There's much to explore now, without fighting any new bosses.
