We set up a new display yesterday. The covers might be too much of a give away but I thought the board could play a game of "guess who".

I was scared to try, but since someone was as confused as I was, I'll open with:

Apt's Erotic Fiction for Geoduck Fetishists

Is that in the ballpark relative to what this thread's purpose is? Posted Image

You guys are terrible.

Normally people have fun with foreign covers of the malazan books in different languages.

The challenge is to guess what these titles are translated from English to Danish.

OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

But isn't that sorta easy since the author names don't change and are rather prominently displayed? Like, there's only so many books by George RR Martin, I'm not going to guess "The Hippompotamus' Crown"...?

And I think the Ben Aaronovitch one translates into English as something like "Watery streams of the English Capital" ^_^

Yeah, but you called the game "Guess who" when the who was quite literally spelled out already...
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I was going to guess - "Winter is here to stay, buy a winter coat bitch!". But google translate came up with the following.

Apt, you should hate yourself for so poorly explaining the concept you were aiming for. I thought that you were trying to make us guess which author that collection of books could be in reference to (as in: 'if you like *this* writer, you will also enjoy *these* books', but then in reverse. 'Guess who' by association, as your bleeding title suggested!). Which is a way better concept anyway and I would totally set this up and launch it myself if I was any good at describing authors based on genre similarities with other authors. Which I am not. But I won't stop anyone else from running with this amazing idea and redeem this car crash of a thread from inevitable obsolescence.

Is the premise that the foreign language titles aren't word-for-word direct translations of their English titles, so we should guess what their exact English translations would be?

E.g. "En Konges Vej" translates literally to "Inside Kong's You-Know-What-You-Know-Where"?

Sure. The challenge would be to guess the actual title without googling it and I'd add what the actual Danish translation was.

Often Danish translators take serious liberties with titles.

I see Way of Kings (2 volumes) Before they are Hanged,Last Argument of Kings, The Steel Remains and I'm guessing the Hobb book is Royal Assassin?

Oh.

So is Brandon Sanderson "En Konges Vej" = "The Kings Way"?

It's skewed a bit as En Konges Vej would translate into A King's Way.

Mentalists guesses are all correct though for some reason The Steel Remains has been translated into The Will of the Steel/ Stålets vilje in Danish.
