I stumbled over the following dialogue between Lostara and Pearl on my reread of HoC (trade paperback p.586):

She started, breath catching. 'You are?'
He looked back, surprised. 'You didn't know? My mother was from Drift Avalii, a half-blood white-haired beauty - or so I'm told, as I have no direct recollection, since she left me with my father as soon as I'd been weaned.'

This actually indicates that Pearl is one of Anomander Rake's great-great-grandchildren :eek3: at least if his father didn't just fool him. We know that Anomander's grandchildren are the only Tiste Andii on Drift Avalii, or at least the only ones mentioned. And up to this point, I think only Rake was mentioned as having white hair among the Tiste Andii. I wonder how many of his brats are actually running around somewhere...

I missed the part about the Andii on Drift Avali being Rake's direct descendants... sort of thought that they were a collection of Andii that chose not to follow Rake's abandonment of MD and embracing of SD.

Can you point me in a direction to a reference?

I thought that Rake's white hair was once mentioned as being something special among the Andii. No idea anymore where that could have been though...

Yet, apart from the colour of Pearl's mother's hair, it seems that there are only Rake's grandkids plus younger brother and one daughter (Phaed was listed as being Rake's and Lady Envy's daughter on Baruk's Eleint tree) are on Drift Avalii, so they are all close kin to him.

I'd be amazed that I missed a reference that blatant and obvious if I didn't speed-read and then re-read again and again and ... you get the idea.

Well... I guess that means that Pearl (assuming he was telling the truth, and that might be a bit of a stretch) is somewhere in the Anomander family tree. Albeit probably lost among the branches and Tiste Simeon squirrel nests.

That's funny, Topper is also part Andii. Perhaps also related?

I once thought that Pearl and Topper were one and the same. When Kalam meets Pearl on the ship in DG, he is wearing green, and rings on his fingers, like Topper in GotM. This theory doesn't seem likely, but there may be a connection between these two.

Topper is said to be half-blood Andii, and Pearl one quarter.

It always made sense to me that pearl was a descendant of rake of some sort... after all rake and his descendants seem to be among the most outgoing of the andii, wandering around doing stuff, whilst msot of teh otehr andii don't seem that adventurous. With that said it would make sense that those andii who have had flings with mortals are likely to be related to rake.

I Thought I saw someone in my squirrel nest the other day... hmm... that cleans it up.
I too, thought that Topper and Pearl may be related. Cos, if all TA are from MD originally, surely they are all related? *tries not to think of incestous andii*
