The beginning of the saga....

1. Why and who killed Calot and Hairlock and why?
2. Why did Hairlock insinuate that Tayschrenn choose those 3 mages for a reason?

Nightchill wanted to kill A'karonys as we learn later...so why kill Calot and Hairlock? Did Tayschrenn suspect and probably facilitate this?

And how did Hairlock know these 3 mages would be picked. What's the significance?

Don't recall this being explained all through.

I think most of this was explained in MoI...
Calot and Hairlock were collateral damage when Tayshrenn and Akaronys threw everything they had at Nightchill and Bellurdan.
That said, Calot, Hairlock, and Tattersail, were all Old Guard, and Laseen had instructed Tays to place them at risk, so their deaths were not accident so much as convenient.
...I think.

Yeah, collateral damage was best I could come up with. But didn't Nightchill want Rake destroyed too?

Not so much destroyed as relieved of his sword as far as I recall.

Rake wasn't killing enough powerful things/people with Dragnipur which was putting the gate into darkness in peril.

… I think she may also have been interested in freeing her "brother", Draconus.

Pretty sure for Nighty the only issue was Draconus.
The whole ‘Rake needs to kill more things’ issue was only raised by Drac to Paran for the first time well after Pale, and as far as we know Paran was the very first person to visit Dragnipur for a stroll and leave.

@abyss when you say "Tayshrenn and Akaronys threw everything they had at Nightchill and Bellurdan." When was it?

Tay was standing right in front of the lot under the moons shadow nearly and the cadre was arrayed behind him and not that close to moon. I didn't see Tay attacking Nightchill at all.

And if Nightchill wanted Rake defeated so she can take the sword, should she be not helping the Malazans?

Will give the podcast a listen to shortly.

I can't seem to get enough of Malazan though I finished the books years ago.

The battle is only related through Tattersail’s recall, where she spends the entire time protecting herself, and by vague/passing mentions from Dujek, Toc, Tays and Korlat later in the book. We never ‘saw’ anything except a demon shredding Nightchill. And we have never ever seen Rake or any other Andii mage summon a demon, while this was one of Tays’ favorite things.
Nightchill was out to grab Dragnipur, not share it or risk someone else getting it. Admittedly not her bestest plan, but underestimating humans is a common Elder God failing.

Good point on the demon. Missed the implications totally.

while demons are Tays thing, maybe he didnt do it directly. We saw in the end of book 1 Quick Ben using vial with demon in it ( later we found out he stole it from Tay ), so it is entirely possible someone else used demon vial in battle of Pale
