Yeah, it's sometime during the original trilogy, not sure if it's been more precisely stated previously. I also can't help but wonder if this will be the first part of a duology, given Cook's other long-forthcoming BC book is called "A Pitiless Rain" and here we have a new Taken named "Mischievous Rain".

I bailed with WATER SLEEPS, but a prequel set during the time I enjoyed reading might be tempting.

Oooh, I love anything and everything BC! And love the cover, but I'm a sucker for anything Swanland touches with a brush.

Got it today, maybe half through. This is set between Black Company and Shadows Linger. So nice to read a new novel with Croaker, One Eye, Goblin, Silent, Elmo, Otto, etc.
The Lady is in charge in Charm, the Dominator is restless in the Barrowland, Resurrectionists want to free him via a sorcerous ritual, and the Lady is using BC to stop this, along with semi-loyal help from Limper and Whisper and a fresh new Taken.
I'd call this as good as the first three novels so far. There are some nice flashback stories involving Senjaks and the Domination. A worthwhile read for BC fans.

Loved the book. Was very happy to find this is not a continuation from soldiers live or water sleeps (whichever is the last) but within the main 3 books.
Would be great if “a pitiless rain” is also set within the storyline of the first three books. Croaker does reminisce about his happy childhood till “the shit started its pitiless rain”.
Spoilers:
So, everyone but croaker/BC knows who mischievous rain truly is? The confusion and memory loss is meant to hid the names but silent remembers?

I liked it, but thought that the middle section was a bit weak and it was not as good as the latest Instrumentalities books.

Sorry for the well delayed post, but I just finished Port of Shadows (read from Shadows Linger (started Feb) through Soldiers Live (finished May). I also think the middle was on the weaker side, mostly because it was quite confusing. I liked the end, despite the continuing confusion. The only thing I've found to make any sense of it was a theory on Reddit that this is Croaker, Lady, and maybe other projecting back in time, thus the loss of memory was meant to not mess up the timeline. Not that that sounds much less confusing. Still, it was a fun book!

Thinking of buying now (with a new bookshelf impending, be rude not to have a stock ready for it)
Also thinking of a BC reread.
Would it slot in well as a new read, mid reread chronologically?
