Ok so I'm only like 11% in - just finished the part where an unexpected addition to the boat voyage joins at the Cursed Soldiers rocks area- but something is already bugging me a little bit.

Why is it Iron Bars is now very much a subordinate to Shimmer and even Blues? I always got the impression that, even if he was of equal rank to Shimmer, he sort of defacto outranked her.
I suppose I can understand him taking a back seater to her since she is taking command of this mission, but also now to Blues as well? That definitely seems strange and not in keeping with established rank so far.

I know he's been recuperating after the events of Stoneweilder, but he is avowed and seems back up on his feet.



Actually there's also another thing that's bugging me a bit- Bellurdan is actually soul joined to Silverfox? Then what was all the Dying God storyline with Nimander? I thought they fought him as the DG?

Shimmer was a company captain. Blues was not but was mage and weaponmadter. Bars was not a captain (cal brinn was captain of his company).

With bellurdan. I guess he can be both.

Bars feels authoritative because he is introduced running a squad and because he is badass, but that doesnt give him high rank

Bars is avowed and first gen Crimson Guard so he automaticallly outranked everyone in his squad back in MT. He was also considered one of their best fighters up with Skinner and Blues. All that said, he was never known to have any formal rank, while Shimmer did.

The Dying God was a shred of Bellurdan... something that was cut away when he fried fighting Tattersail in GotM.

Hmm I thought Iron Bars actually held the rank of captain. I'll have to check the dramatis personae from earlier books, but fair enough.
