my 2017 goals:

View PostMentalist, on 02 January 2017 - 05:07 AM, said:

Ok, so I'm finally getting over the hangover, I've spent the last 40 mins staring at my bookshelves updating the "to read" resolutions thread, and it's time to reflect on how my life's actually been moving along:

For 2017, I need to focus on breaking a lot of bad habits concerning my social and personal life, since work-wise I seem to be in a fairly good place. general comment: I did not do well with this goal, but towards teh end of the year I reconciled myself with this, and am in a much better mental head-space over it
-
Personal/organizational goals
1) Maintain proper sleep schedule with no staying up late on work nights for no good reason - Partial success, but not really
2) Beyond general byweekly cleaning, at the end of each month, review all correspondence and paperwork at home Total fail - need to write this goal down to stick to it
3) Also, once a month, review all things related to PD, and spend time working on linkedin. Make that a stated goal and keep reminders another total fail
4) Once done recovering from the injury, speak to my father about driving Nope. Though I did admit to myself basically that I don't want to drive, so i'm feeling ok about this
5) Actually manage to stick to reading in French this time, since I've been writing this goal down for at least 5 years now. I don't recall when I stopped this time, but it was pretty early on in the year

Overall, in terms of these goals, the year was an abysmal failure.

Health and recreation
1) Make sure to swim at least once a week- goal should be to swim after every soccer game. - mostly successful
2) Ensure to continue exercising in the mornings, as this will help with motivation for proper sleep schedule Nope, this dropped off pretty much when I came back from vacation
3) Aim for 2 full workouts a week see 2
4) Continue playing soccer, but take it easier in the summer (4 teams was a bit of an overkill). Ensure to warm up and stretch properly before all games, and not be pressured into rushing to play, as I need to avoid injuries
-work on shooting, at least once a week. Improve control and touch with the left foot, and lose the fear of playing on the left. Generally, success. I missed about a month of playing in August due to an injury, but after my vacation got right back into it, and in the fall season I've been generally playing well, and becoming a more rounded player, ever so slowly

5) This goes without saying, but still: get my elbow fixed up, regain full ROM. Didn't happen - I have a permanent injury, that can be improved possibly somewhat by surgery, which I elected not to look into for now

Overall, I'm decently ok with this. I didn't gain any significant weight, stayed appropriately active and had few serious injuries.

Social
1) Keep in touch better with friends and family back home- make sure to speak to them at least once a month (with a new phone and Skype, this should be totally realistic) - not as regular as I would like, but I've definitely spoke more to people back home than before
2) Continue involvement with charity pool tournaments and trivia groups. Make sure to meet new people there each time generally a success
3) Actually speak to my friends about doing a regular outings to play pool Nope
4) work on actually meeting new people and expanding my social circle. Since my brain likes to make excuses about "my life not being in order yet" to put social stuff down the priority list, work on figuring out the real estate situation. Real Estate situation is beyond figured out. Didn't really maintain sociability level (though the summer was actually pretty nice in that aspect), but I'm in a much better headspace about that now than I was a few months ago

This area definitely could've been better, but once again, decent improvement as opposed to prior years. I had a bit of a stumbling block in the fall where I was going through a bit of a mental adjustment ont he background of turning 30, but with a lot of introspection, I feel I worked through most of those issues

Leisure
1) Stick to the "to-read" list. Try to top this year's 52 new books read 60 books read. Making a few dents in that list. Got a Kindle app for my phone, and can now use e-books to track down and complete out-of-print series
2) Stick to the "to play" list. Try to play at least 15 games to completion this year Nope. The year was dominated by one game, I only played 2 games off my list to completion and started a 3rd on the Xmass holidays
-Do not buy any new games unless I've completed at least 3 games for one new one bought Not quite there, but I spent A LOT less money this year on games

I spent A LOT more money on books than I probably should have. With me making a partial switch to ebooks, I'm hoping to cut down the expense factor, if not the quantity

Work/financial
1) Plan to go back home this summer to see my grandmother before Alzheimer's makes her forget everything. Have a decent amount set aside for that. done
2) Get a proper mortgage pre-approval done
3) Reduce student loan payments. bank 15 extra k by end of the year bough an apartment, so this kinda dropped. Had a decent chunk banked, but nowhere near 15k
4) Plan a good 30th birthday, and have a chunk of cash set aside for that. Done. Everyone there was fairly happy
5) Continue with good work habits, especially going over all WIP every 2 months, since it seems to be working Overall, the year was less work-intensive than 2016 (mostly because I didn't get saddled with a non-stop June of Doom, unlike last year), but in terms of raw results, the 2 years are comparable. And I got a raise, so my bosses clearly think I'm doing something right

Generally, success across the board here.

So, in general, a very productive year in terms of financial/work-related goals, not so much in terms of social/personal/self-development. This dovetailed nicely with my late-in-year epiphany that I really can be accurately described as a "workaholic" and that I'm okay with that, and with relationships and such not being a priority, regardless of what people around me might think. So I feel I'm in an okay spot with that.

I obviously need to work on maintaining and reinforcing positive organizational habits and work on maintaining a functional routine. I managed to condition myself that I have to swim regularly (no matter the weather outside) so surely, I can do the same for staying organized and on top of things?

Let's put some stuff down for 2018:

Work/Career related things

1) Maintain the same general pattern of reviewing outstanding/work-in-progress to stay on top of things
2) Attend Professional Development events in person (rather than via webcast). Network, build connections
3) By end of May, I need to look into the actual requirements for becoming a Certified Specialist in my field

Health/Sports goals
1) Continue swimming - the goal continues to be to fit one swim between soccer games
2) Continue playing soccer- stick to 2 teams/season.
3) Get back into morning exercise. ACTUALLY get up with the 1st alarm.
4) Get back to 2 full workouts per week

Social goals
1) Make speaking to family/friends a regular occureence Write this goal down
2) Continue participating in extra-social groups (trivia group, Ukranian Lawyers' Association, etc). Look into getting involved with some other groups
3) interconnected with work, but: network more

Personal/ self-improvement
1) Go through the pile of Law Society magazines that I've collected, extract useful info, then get rid of them
2) Look into getting life insurance-\
3) Make monthly linkedin work a goal WRITE THIS DOWN
4) Try to make a dent in French readings (also look into more French music to go along with this)
5) Work on limiting binge-drinking- for one-evening nights out, set a cut-off point (preferably before I can no longer taste liquor) to avoid excesses such as puking/passing out/brutal next-day hangovers.

Leisure/Recreation
1) Read 60 books
2) limit paper book purchases
3) maintain current buying pattern with games. Work on the "to-play" list.

make it all official to depress myself in 2019 when I haven't attained any.

financial/work

routinely put money away in my savings account, not to be touched.
actually work the whole year and not take 2/3 months off cause I feel like it, this relates back to point 1
get the finance organised for my driving range and get it built
Maintain my current wage, even if I change jobs to another project

health/lifestyle
cut out the crisps
cut down/out fast food
get into some kind of a regular exercise routine/ program
as Ment - drinking, I don't do much casual drinking, occasionally I'll have a few pints watching the match or a glass or two of wine with dinner but usually it's a massive rip or not at all. Need to learn to put the brake on a bit before I reach full dickhead mode of buying trays of shots.

social

kind of links to health, but also for social, be more active at the golf club, play more and attend more events etc.
actually visit all my friends who have kids
stay in touch with my cousins better.

ETA - have set my Goodreads challenge at 60 books

If I manage like a 30/40% range I'll be happy

Been working on and off on some of these for ages but here goes

Work/Financial
1) Try learn more about the field of finance, understand the investments I have made
2) Spend more! - may seem counter intuitive but I think for a long time I have been overly conservative. I don't want to go crazy but I think I can treat myself to a few luxuries such as holdiays.

Personal/ self-improvement
1) Maintain and improve efforts to exercise more (Gym 3 times a week)
2) Try and do a little exercise each day, even 10 press ups
3) Eat healthier (This will be my Everest)
4) Read one non fiction book a month
5) Try and learn Japanese again
6) Try and learn coding again

Leisure/Recreation
1) Get back into reading
2) Focus on what I am doing. Watch TV or don't, but don't watch something in the background while playing on my phone
3) If a show or game is not great just move on
4) Keep gaming, work on the backlog. I enjoy gaming but I fall into a weird trap of being scared to play because I don't want to lose focus on my work. This is thankfully ending now my PhD is over
5) Travel more!
6) Make more of an effort in planning social acivities.

Lets see.. I'll be happy is I hit half of those by the end of the year, but here goes:

Work/Career
  • Find a new/decent job OR pull in enough freelance work to support myself (end game being that last part, no matter which way) --> find enough money to buy a new graphic tablet
  • More networking (which I freaking hate, this is going to be the toughest goal, everything else is a joke compared to that) --> learn to answer emails promptly
  • Draw more, preferably a little every day or at least every other day --> I need to get faster and regain my confidence

Health
  • Continue going to the gym (which isn't difficult, 'cause I love it, but since it's not around the corner I can only manage once a week, I want to expand that to twice a wekk at least OR exercise at home on two days) --> lose at least ten more kilos, preferably 15
  • Continue improving my food choices (though the only thing in the way of this is that I share the fridge with my mom and am too lazy to cook two meals - one for me and one for her meat-craving appetite)

Social
  • Be less of a bitch to people who miss the D&D weekends, though if the game has to be cancelled because of too many people not being able to keep to a schedule, I reserve my right to bitch

Personal
  • Grow out my natural hair colour again and rock the grey/white I've been spotting in the mirror while I'm young enough for that to look like a fashion choice; resist dying it green
  • Get my place in order (I've always had trouble with keeping things ordered and my place is a mess and has been for the whole year, that needs to change)
  • Train myself into a proper sleep schedule

Leisure
  • Stop wasting time on the internet and waste my time mure productively, like by... reading
  • Actually read the books I buy, though I have no set number of books I want to read this year, just want to continue my quest to weed out the the crap from the gems in my readings pile and maybe read more non-fiction again --> get back to reading on the train instead of holding on to my coffee mug for dear life
  • Watch a couple movies/series (I haven't watched a single one in 2017 if I don't count those we watched on New Year's Eve)
  • Get back into oil painting
  • That one's actually halfway work: Finish plotting that comic I've been plotting for year, sort through the notes I've collected on three devices and several norebooks and get to drawing, write at least some of chapters, work up the courage to show the proposal around or put it up online

No idea where this belongs
  • Go see my brother in person, or get him to come here for a couple weeks

So explain why 'fish n chips' includes fries, and why the first 100 google images of 'a packet of crisps' are bags of chips.

No resolutions for me. I'm pretty sure I'm going to finish 2016 fatter and with a lot less money than I start it with.

Hey go me! I did it.

Ah shit. I wasn't meant to finish 2017 even fatter still! I lost a fair bit but piled it back and then some since going back to work and having no time for preparing fresh food or exercising.

May have just bought a rowing machine. Which is a start. Phase 2 will be to use it.....

Crisps can also be chips
All fries are chips nut not all chips are fries.
Slap Chips are different from regular Chips

Their should be an IUPAC commission on this!

If you never used the first rowing machine how did you end up buying a second? Also why are they so expensive? 12000 rand or approx. 600 PounDS here. Seems pricy to me

First one was quite cheap, like £100, but it had minimal resistance, it worked on magnetic and elastic resistance? It was quite poor.
The second one it ace, easily as good as a concept c2, but like 1/4 the price, it's air resistance and is tight going.

I'm going to keep it simple: be happier with who I am than I was in 2017 (whether that means changing myself to like me better, or changing my perspective about myself... probably could use a bit of both). *fingers crossed*

Also, they're clearly "fries". If you google "poutine chips" the first 50 results are most definitely not something you would put in a poutine.

better than usual I'd say.

I did not write stuff down. Not sure why.

Have life insurance paperwork, need to fill it out.

Stopped networking stuff when summer started.

Been doing OK with drinking until around Aug. In Aug I probably drank as much as the rest of the year combined (nothing bad happened yet, though, except weight gain of a few kilos)

Sleep patterns continue to deteriorate, I can't recall the last time I got up w/ first alarm OR did a morning stretch.

Social stuff's been not great either. Work is OK.

1 book behind schedule in Goodreads challenge. All over the place in gaming to-play list

I've unhealthily lost about 45 pounds. Yay?
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....
