Don’t buy cars.. buy a big huge truck..

Safer. There’s a reason when you drive past fire stations they all drive massive trucks. It’s not a ego thing.

So what I hear is that you are a soccer mom who buys the huge Expedition and can barely see over the wheel, so that when you lose control of the vehicle and hit someone else, they die and not you.

Great.

What a wonderful suggestion you just made.

Fuck everyone else because you bought a vehicle too large for you to control.

Hooray!

Relax bro! Never been in accident and a great driver..The vehicle has nothing to do about control... lol

The driver does ...and it’s all about the drunks/other bad drivers. Having mass when someone else hits you helps absorb the impact protecting you, potentially making it less harmful to you and your people in your car. You can also perceive more as you can see over smaller cars better, especially when your truck is lifted. Larger heavier tires are a good idea too as you gain traction and have the ability in cold environments to travel over icy roads.

SUVs on average have 16 deaths per million in accidents, while smaller vehicles account for 64 deaths per million making them far more safe to drive in. To top it off SUVs get into less accidents too as their size increases visibility on the road to other drivers. A vehicle seen at that precious time could be helpful. A lift and larger more grippy tires helps this process as better road control never hurts. A good solid Diesel engine doesn’t hurt things too as a consumer as they last forever too as a note. A lot of stuff for sure to help a driver is offered.

"Firefighters"
"It's not an ego thing"

Lol. I know a couple of firefighters and there are two really distinct types. The down to earth, doing it for good reasons kind, and the 'I'm a fucking hero!' kind. It is the latter who also happen to drive big trucks. ;)
/end counter-anecdote

More seriously though, in my driving experience it is people driving big trucks (especially utes, but also SUVs) who don't know how to drive. They seem to feel like they have constant right of way and apparently the "added visibility" afforded by their great size only works to see over cars in front of them - it makes smaller cars behind and to their sides fucking invisible.
Most of them don't know what a 'lane' is or how to stay in it, and watch out on a corner. Also, apparently it gives carte blanche to take up two spaces in parking lots. Probably doesn't help that some of these vehicles are American sized now, despite the fact that our roads aren't, but even the smaller versions seem to outright attract shit drivers. Probably the "better them than me" mentality Nico likes so much.

Also, the car makes a huge difference to the driving/control, Nico. A big truck handles very differently to a compact hatch and both of those handle differently to a sports car. What the fuck are you smoking, it makes no difference?

What icy roads is South Africa likely to have?

This "buy a truck" line makes little sense in any real world context to the thread starting post.

I wonder what the incident rate for SUVs is however... Would not surprise me if owning a larger vehicle your more incident prone due the fact the car is harder to handle. Kinda my Hyundai Elantra got totally by a cadillac escalade, yes a bigger car does certainly reduce the dmg from impact, but its also harder to drive and woulndt surprise me if body shops get more business from van owners who scrape the pavements and whatnot.

My Jeep got hit twice, drove away with minor damage. Both cars that hit me were utterly totalled.

Ice roads? Define this phenomena you refer to as icy roads? Also is it true that ice can fall from the sky?

Also I have never bought into this idea that manuals are better driven one for 12 years. Would by far prefer the automatic.

Can only agree that and price was why I went for an older Z4m coupe when I sold my old rust bucket a few months back. If you got a sporty car its more fun with manual, modern automatics these days however are far superior in every other way.

I just looked up snowfall stats for South Africa. They say it has snowed 22 days in Jo'burg in the last 103 years. 22 out of the last 37,595 days.

I think it's fair to say that snow won't be that big of a consideration for you in this car purchase.

Love my Honda Civic.

Great mileage and good features. You can turn off/on mileage features.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....
