Finished the season. It was pretty good.

It reminds me of my initial impression of Narcos season 1. Where the performances are good, and it manages to be interesting, without really building up a character for you to root for.

Binged 9 of the 10 episodes of this on Sunday (it’s a bleak ass show to watch all in a row like that BTW)…and I think it’s solid.

It’s not phenomenal by any stretch, but it’s solidly great and quite interesting to see the genesis of what would eventually become FBI profiling.

It’s interesting to have given the 3 leads problems they can’t overcome in their personal lives, that affect/catalyse what they are doing in their professional one:

Holden with his sociology girlfriend who he can really get a handle on and ofttimes their relationship suffers as a result.
Tench with his tense marriage and adopted son with behavioural problems [makes me wonder if that’s why he worked behavioural science even before the new group formed]
Carr who is in the closet, left her lover {Lena Olin! Who I’ve not seen since ALIAS) to work closer with the group, and now substitutes that relationship with an unknown cat in her laundry room [which also eventually ends].

It throws the various off-kilter “pushes” that each character makes in the grand scheme of what will become profiling, into stark relief with what is driving those character hitches.

The whole thing is VERY dry though. I’ll say that. It’s very much what I expect from Fincher. He loves his sort of plodding, often chuckly, dialogue that leads to heavier scenes with major impact. Most of Tench and Ford’s banter falls into that category.

It’s interesting to know just how much the FBI (and society ads a whole) FOUGHT the idea of doing what these guys wanted to do (get inside the heads of the killers, to prevent more killers) and considered it in poor taste. In the first or second episode where you can see that the police dept. they are doing their teaching at so vehemently reacts to the idea that Manson had extenuating childhood circumstances which helped enable who he eventually became. To them he was just “born evil” and there was no more to it. No nuance. But these new FBI team asking to try to sort out the nuance to PREVENT more crime...was like super foreign to everyone.

There are a few of the heavy hitters they speak with who I had no idea about beforehand (Kemper, Speck), so hearing that stuff was chilling, especially Kemper who was so matter-of-fact. *shiver*

On the whole it’s an interesting show, dry as hell, and enjoyable to a certain level. It’s un-salacious (most of the time)…compared with…something like AHS S1 which revels and wallows in the salaciousness of such things (including an episode that references Speck) and for that I laud it. It could very well have allowed itself to descend into something more scandalous and it never does. It stays high-brow and analytical. I had moments where I assumed the script would do something, and it doesn’t, and that was refreshing. This makes sense though as Fincher has basically wanting to make this series since he made ZODIAC…and ZODIAC plays out almost exactly like MINDHUNTER does. It’s a slow burn, with more facts and dryness than anything else, and gets under your skin more as a result of the facts than anything else.

It’s neat to know that the show is based on real FBI ppl as well (John Douglas, Robert Ressler, and Ann Wolbert Burgess) and their goal of creating an FBI unit to detail and deal with serial killers.

It should be noted that the guy from the cold opens (the ADT guy, based on serial killer Dennis Rader) was active for over 30 years and wasn’t caught till 2005…so his story would likely be a series-long arc according to Fincher.

Solid stuff. Need to watch the finale still…but would easily watch a second season.

One thing that sorta bugged me about the ending, why the big controversy over the language? It's the FBI and they are investigating the minds of deranged individuals, and you are worried about language being used?

David Fincher let slip that season 2 would focus on the Atlanta Child Murders, which occurred from 1979 to 1981, and for which Wayne Williams in incarcerated. It's a fascinating true crime case, so I'll be interested to see how MINDHUNTERS handles it.

Just finished watching through this. Really intense and excellent show from start to finish. Very much looking forward to season 2. Not sure who the dude with the tache in Park City, Kansas was but presumably it's to show that people like the ones they're speaking to can live right under our noses.

He’s the BTK killer, Dennis Rader. They use him as the cold open segments because he was doing his thing for more than a decade and getting away with it. I think he started in ‘74 and wasn’t caught until ‘91. But yah, you’re right they use him to show that this stuff was happening and can happen under the noses.

Season 2 is the Atlanta Child murderer, so that should be super interesting.

Thinking about it while at work. Why did Holden collapse at the end? I get that he was a bit of a mess but I'm not sure why he went so dramatic?
