Mafia participation is definitely linked to overall forum activity.

The forums are a lot quieter than they used to.be, ergo there is a smaller pool to get players from, and of the remaining base how many are as active as they used to be.

It's a natural cycle, personally I'm amazed at how some of you were able to play game after game after game, on two fronts, one being time to play constantly at the pace some of you play and two being how you just didn't burn out on interest.

^^this

It's not like there was ever one core mafia group on the forums and only they played for 50+ games. There was always people retiring from the game and new ones coming in to replace them. The retiring has continued but the newcomers have dwindled.

If you want to try and get the old fogeys who are too busy for mafia back in... has anyone considered trying "live" games on the weekends? E.g. we use a chatroom and the whole game only takes a couple hours? Maybe people who can't commit to logging in every day/evening for two weeks would be more able/willing to set aside just a few hours, specifically scheduled in advance? The moderation side of things changes a lot - like if you want death scenes you need to have them all written up ahead of time - but I think it's feasible.

As for Malazan Mafia, it would be sad to see it go. I think to an extent it is a reflection of the site's raison d'etre also losing significance in recent years. I do wonder, though, if we could capture new interest by advertising a Malazan-themed mafia game, with a Malaz setting, characters and roles, and then posting an invite in the Inn/Announcements (I know that's not generally what Announcements are for, but the game would be about reminding us all why we were here in the first place, getting the larger community involved...and it's at the top of the page). I'd be willing to make the setting/mod it/write the scenes. And if Malaz mafia is to die, then at least let's go out with an appropriate theme!

If you want to run with this idea, Khell, FYI I have a bunch of character/setting notes and draft write-ups for Espers 2 that was set in the Malazan world but I never used them because I never ran it. You're welcome to pilfer any/all of it to help you with building an in-universe game.

it was a drunk and enraged Macros, a man who typos at the best of times (I am getting better though)

that post and the tampon post (sadly lost) were the highlights of my early days.
I still occasionally go back to Numbers mafia and reread the endgame with gustys humiliation again to make myself feel good.

I want in on the nostalgia! While I have no glorious/infamous rants, my favorite mafia moment that I will never be able to beat was convincing Gnaw to vote for his own leader. Who I was supposed to be meeting up with IRL for dinner with a friend. I arrived late and was like 'please don't hurt me' while Starling tried to set me on fire with the power of eyeballs-that-set-things-on-fire and our friend was very, very confused.

I don't think Gnaw has ever been forgiven Posted Image

Tapper got a girlfriend, D'rek moved on. The power-house of game making moved on. Shinrei hasn't done a game in a while. That leaves Blend as one of the only mod's left but that means we lose a player to modding too. I agree mostly with Gust Hubb and if it's enjoyable for most then the time is found. RIP Peanutbutta and the Survivor game.

Mafia never dies, people just get burned out by IRL 3-day long voting sessions to wind up the last two Days of gameplay with only four players left and 900 posts in the last four fucking hours most of which don't even fucking make sense and then you walk away and toss a match behind you because you want to just burn it all the fuck down.

Just burn it all the fuck down.
I finally have an avatar ... and it's better than yours.

The WoT Mafia games last forever, and they don't use alts, at least not when I gave it a try a couple years ago. Days lasted like a week, nights lasted like 3 days - if I remember right.

And I am actually married

The thing for me is, I would love to play again, yet I don't have a lot of time.
Throughout the 90s-120s in game numbers, "in as a filthy lowposter" became sort of my handle, and 1) I got lynched a lot just for that and 2) town lacked so much initiative (Tatts and Khell aside) that there was never really anything to give an opinion about when I was around with time to post.

I will happily return when I can dedicate 2x 30 minutes a day to mafia, and if somehow work slows a little, I may even throw a game together (and nothing like TMDI 10: I have experimented too much with adding CCG/board-game/ roleplaying mechanics to mafia to not know that it leads to broken games, and that is where my heart is when it comes to mad games), but at the least something with some storytelling involved.

Oh, and mad props to whomever is running the Benses game. Those are some of the best games I've played in.
Everyone is entitled to his own wrong opinion. - Lizrad
