Hello everyone,

Long time since my last post. I just finished The Bonehunters. Oh my... What a ride that was... This is certainly my favorite book so far in the series. For the first time we have an understanding of most of the major players, we -- vaguely -- understand what's going on, and for the first time all storylines come together. The action in this book was breathtaking. TB is a clear 5/5 in my opinion. As always though, I am a bit perplexed regarding some events/behaviours. Some insight on these things would be greatly appreciated:

  • Can you please explain to me what happened with the meteors over the Otataral Island? What I want to understand is why, how and who. Out the blue we see the meteors nearing Wu. Who summoned them? Why did he/she do it? And how? Is this connected to the strange sightings of the moon?
  • After Y'ghatan, we have Fiddler's group along with Quick Ben, Kalam etc chasing the 14th. Why didn't Quick Ben used a warren to catch up to the 14th? This part doesn't make sense to me.
  • In Malaz, when the mob was preparing to attack the 14th, they saw a small meteor crashing into the sea. What was that? How is this connected to anything?
  • What the f* is wrong with Tayschrenn? Why was he locked in his room throughout the book? What is he doing?
  • Eres... This lady is confusing. Let's get some facts about her. She rapes Trull to birth a child to become the true ruler of Shadow. She... rapes Bottle I guess. She has posessed T'amber (which means she's having sex with Tavore). She "worships" Bottle. She stops Icarium with one touch. So, she is a powerful, nymphomaniac being who... What? I'm lost. Why does Eres worship Bottle? Why does she "rape" him? What's going on with her? Some help please...
  • I understand that some powerful beings have great insight and thus they can "predict" the future or certain events. How can Grub know with such detail so many things? It seems a bit convenient that he knows so much. I know that he's is special since his walk in Raraku (DG) but again, it seems a bit too much.

Some insights on these things would be great. Thank you!

1. There's revelations to come, but in terms of stuff you've read already, think back to a certain vision Heboric has in Sha'ik Reborn's camp (in HoC).
2. It just wasn't fashionable at the time.
3. That was the T'lan Imass who had plugged the rift in the sky in Deadhouse Gates and in TBH seeks out Gesler et al in Braven Tooth's apartment.
4. He's preparing for something else.
5. She's got her own agenda and it involves seeding the timeline with a few special children.
6. I tend to think he's not just a kid with magical insight, but something even more special/unique.

I think bum = bump. Typo, not name-calling.

There are costs (in terms of risk) to warren travel. It is a finite possibility that whoever went in might never come back. So you to have weigh the alternatives.

There is a magic to life in its ability to survive even under the worst of circumstances. Maybe the Eresal is the embodiment of that magic.

About Grub, you need to keep reading. But it is not uncommon to have special intuition (albeit rarely).

I suspect "bummer" was what was meant :-)

Aventinus, get in here and explain yourself. You've sewn more than enough uncertainty already.

1 RAFO, see Heboric's vision back in HoC.
2 the fire elemental scorched the warrens. QB could come in, but not out again.
3 Imass warrior Legana Breed finally working his way out of the gate he was sent into in DG and looking to reclaim his sword from Stormy.
4 he was staying neutral
5 time traveller manipulating events to bring about the desired outcome double entendre wheeeee....
6 RAFO.

Yes, I remember that. The "trip" Heboric experienced. Huge jade statues were traveling in space filled with souls from tCG's world. Does this mean that they just followed him here?

Yeap, of course it's a typo, I wouldn't call anyone here something like this :D

Was that explained or is it something you assume? I don't remember it being explained.

Re the fire elemental I don't recall the exact wording and can't search right now, but my recall is that it was explained, albeit briefly.
Re Tayschrenn, you have a problem with a character having an agenda that doesn't include 'help the good guys'? In this series?

'Three leagues,' Quick Ben said under his breath.

Kalam scratched at the stubble on his chin. Some old wounds - that enkar'al at the
edge of the Whirlwind's wall had turn him up pretty bad --
were aching after the long forced march back towards the Fourteenth Army.
After what they have had seen in the warren, no-one was in the mood to complain, however.

'So,' Kalam said, 'the warrens really are in trouble.'
'I did tell you that, Kal.'
'You did. and you tod the Adjunct the same thing.
But she wanted us to get to Y'Ghatan before Leoman. And that means the warrens.'

'There!' Truth hissed, pointing.
Emerging from the grey gloom, something massive, twoering, black as a storm-cloud,
filling the sky. And behind it, another, and another ..
'Time to go', quick Ben said.

re using the warrens to catch up to the 14th after Y'Ghatan:

Note that when QB/Bottle are doing their little ritual and QB goes and saves his sister from the Hounds, he isn't physically travelling through the warrens there. Just like he did in GotM, QB is only sending his spirit (and I guess manifesting a duplicate body around it on the other end), while his body remains with Bottle and Kalam (slumped over and drooling, probably).

So they have some reason for not physically travelling through a warren to the 14th (it's quite possible that there simply isn't any suitable warren for moving that many people available in that region other than the Imperial Warren and that is too risky), but that is a different case than being able to use the warrens non-physically.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.
