The scum motivation is hoping that role is clumsy enough to get mislynched and disowning responsibility by saying, "oops, my vote was there since rvs and I didn't like his attitude".

What does town get out of what Merrid is doing?

I have seen town's track record. I'm pretty confident in my assertion, and you continuing to antagonize everyone on Day 1 won't be helping your case.

Protip: mafia is a team game. You're trying to get everyone to adopt your preferred strategy, and it may not work as well as you wish if you keep insulting people.

Also, dunno how Maria's played around your parts, but in Malaz-land, day 1 is generally not super-serious, so you may encounter some... traction with your play-style.
