I wouldn't actually say CINDER is a fair competitor, beyond the basics of steampunk. It's far more fantasy with steampunk elements, wide cast, bigger scope. SENLIN is sf, single pov, much narrower story.

GUYS, I'm exactly where Whisperzzzz was on May 24th, 2017 - 55 pages into Arm of the Sphinx.
I loved Senlin and am loving Sphinx. His writing just pulls me in and all the fuss about 'excitement' couldn't mean less to me. It's an elegant tale in a unique environment. I enjoy that there is a lot going on beneath the surface of the tower, and encourage anyone who is up to the parlour and kinda confused/irritated by this Ringdom to keep going. It serves its purpose. I also like Senlin just as he is. He's like Sansa Stark - everyone doesn't like 'em because they are 'soooo naive' but then the jokes on them because it's just the slowest of burns to arc, and slow burns are often the best.
