Well the movie is only the first of two, and it seemingly focuses on the kids (instead of going back and forth). Interesting decision, but probably a wise one for a theatrical version?
IT was an awesome film, that scared the living hell out of an 11 year old me. I watched it again a few years later and it still scared the shit out of me. It was a fantastic film. What I cannot stand is splitting it into two films. Just so they can earn extra £ from it. They do that a lot these days. The first film will have to be fantastic to make me watch the second, otherwise I won't. Then feel like I wasted my time.

I think your ire is a bit misplaced there Tattersail. First of all there hasn't been any IT films before now (as far as I am aware anyway?). The original on screen adaption of IT from the 90s is a two part 4 hour mini-series. For some reason I remember it being 4 episodes but that is besides the point.
The book is really big and it jumps between the kids when they are small and when they are older. It makes a lot of sense to split the story into two films and focus on their younger years and their final battle with It.

You know I am going from memory I just remember being shit scared at the time.
So I'll just go duck back under cover, although I still think 2 part films are mainly crap and pointless. Breaking Dawn, The Hobbit, Allegiant are examples.
Deathly Harrows was great but the more Harry Potter the better in my opinion. It still irks me that the last book was split into two films even though they were both great.
Yet, I don't remember IT being spun over lots of episodes, and that puts me in the category of people that said they were disappointed they didn't do another series. In the line of GoT for example.

IT, as Apt said, is a large book. The original version on TV was a mini The Stand. A 2 hour double-clip that had climaxes as both children and then adults. If they pull it off well, focusing on just the children, THEN the adults, it could be absolutely stunning.
The imagery and soundtrack will make or break this film.

Yeah, IT is a massive volume, and well, well worth a two-film adaptation.
In fact, a one-film adaptation could never, ever do it justice.

Not without being about 5 hours long! I think I'm correct in saying that 'IT' is even longer than The Stand (the longer rerelease) in terms of page, 'bout 100 pages or so in my copies I think.

It's been awhile since I've read IT, but I think the uncut The Stand is longer and with more pages. Might be wrong, though.

I have them both somewhere, will check and get back with an answer.

Google tells me THE STAND uncut version wins with 1168 pages, IT in second place with 1104, both hardcover first ed from same printer.

Well I won't argue with that
I have them both in paperback, same year of release, publisher, same line of King books - but maybe different printers I guess - I can't actually find my copy of The Stand right now which is vexing! But yeah my copy of IT has 1376 pages and I seem to remember The Stand was about 1320 or so. Obviously it'll differ from edition to edition though, and I've got no idea if they were the same printer or not so that's probably the difference.

LOL I think I have three copies of IT. An old hardcover inherited from my brother, with the green hand in the sewer. A paperback with the Tim Curry Pennywise. And a paperback with the cartoony skull with stars in its eyes.
I did see the newer cover at a bookstore recently and it's pretty awesome:

Oh cool! The new trailer captures Pennywise's 1st appearance(yellow eyes) perfectly compared to mini!
I'm only on pg 30 but I'm now fully commited I think. I'm wondering if this opening bit will be shown in our more tolerant age? I can see why this didn't make it in mini. My excitement for this film is through the roof now. I will burn it to ashes if it flops though.
I'm wondering because of the projector bit in trailer if the kids section is placed in 50's or if they will place it in 80's with the adults section in our current time? Ed just watched it again. It's 80's cars in George's bit.

Oh man if you can see why that didn't make it to the mini series, just fucking wait till you get too some of the other scenes. Like seriously this book was largely written in the middle of King's alcohol and drug fueled nightmares, some scenes are truly mental!
I genuinely envy you reading it for the first time though man:)

Hard to call... there's a shittonne of material in the book that doesn't need to be in the movie.

I actually love that this thread has, for the time being, become mostly your updates on the book as you go, I can almost vicariously read the book for the first time again, BK This is definitely one of those books where it's a shame I cannot do that, this and The Stand as well actually if I'm on King's work specifically. If it wasn't for that fact that I am finishing up the The Prince of Nothing in anticipation of the Aspect Emperor books I ordered on Amazon being delivered very soon I'd probably start it up again, seeing as it's just sitting on my bedroom floor after I fished it out the other day for a page count. It's super-length coupled with my abysmally slow reading pace in the last couple of years are making me question the undertaking though, especially seeing as there's a list of books I haven't read even once yet about as long as the river Nile right now and has been for some time.
EDIT: Also yeah that part with the eyes is creepy as all hell, like a colossal squid or something, only even more alien!
