I think one of the main themes in DL was "doing the right thing." This is really important for the MBotF (isn't it amazing how it took us 6000 pages to realize what those books were about?), so I'm glad it is such an integral part of this origin story.
As much as I love all things Malazan, it is often difficult to wade through all the depravity. FoD and FoL are prime examples--everybody has serious issues, essentially all motives are flawed, and it's drudgery to read.
That's one breath of fresh air in DL. You gain a sense of comradery with the characters, because they are actually doing the right thing. We LIKE THEM. Not just because they are powerful, but their actual personalities, and they care about other people despite everything. Yes, he's an assassin, but he has this compelling sense of "rightness" of things and develops his own code of honor. Iko is perfect in her duty and completely free from pride, and the scene where she spends the day cutting was just phenomenal, as was the scene where she told the solder "You did your best". They are thoughtful, honest, empathetic and charitable...yet also incredible warriors.
Very unusual, and very good reading. Bravo.
That being said...I had no idea who Iko was until the she told us...and then everything clicked. Yes, that's EXACTLY what she would have been like at the beginning...and it answers why she had such a high rank in the CG, despite not appearing all that martially impressive.

Are you royalty or something? Why you keep saying "we"?
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

And so are you saying you didn't like the characters, that's sad!
and you knew their grand plan for TCG from the beginning? I'm impressed!
I mean, we are impressed.
Oops. WE mean, we are impressed.
