Hey Admins (Silencer), in the midst of the streams of bullshit Mal spouted yesterday, I actually came to think about the running of this place.

You guys typically only communicate when some kind of server shenanigans or board updates happen. But how are things going currently?

Are there any current or future issue or changes we should be aware of?

Do you guys need any funding from the members? I remember a bunch of us donating to paypal years ago but I imagine you must have spent it all on hookers and blow by now.

A more serious question I came to think about is, what actually happens to the forum if Silencer one day gets swallowed up by the earth? Are there back-up plans for ownership and server hosting? How many life-rafts are actually installed on this forum if we hit an iceberg?

The board is in a pretty good state, we had a very generous donation from one member which should ensure we don't have any funding issues for sometime.

I don't think we have any formal life-raft plans, but we should be ok bar Silencer and Xae simultaneously disappearing. Maybe we should look at setting something up, the forum has had admins disappear before but I don't think it will happen easily these days with all the many forms of communication now available.

Well, I pay for and manage the server so there's no chance of me disappearing.

Ah, the old "Make sure they can't survive with out you" strategy. Sensible.

I'm Silencer's bum chum. We met on this cruise some years ago.

Silencer's got that handled, if you know what I mean.

Serious answer: MzE shares a server with DC which has some resources to spare, so I'm not incurring any additional costs for the moment.

And as IH mentioned, we are not short of funds for the foreseeable future. With the server expenses covered, our outgoings are minimal (essentially the forum software license + chat license, and the domain name renewal).

Regards any significant events coming up, unless we decided to upgrade the forum software, there isn't much likely to change in the way we all use the forum day to day.

Which, really, is where our members come in. Does anyone feel like there is something that needs to change here? Anything we could add, remove, or do differently? Contrary to a certain persons opinion, we pretty much have an open door on suggestions to improve the forum. :(

This is something I've considered suggesting given the security vulnerabilities in this version of IP.Board. It's been EoL for years now. There's also a fair chance it won't be compatible with PHP7, and PHP5 will be EoL eventually. (There's no PHP6. Because reasons.)

However, this would remove all themes and extensions, including the reputation thing. And the new version isn't very good. So, at this point, it may not be tenable.

Something I will do in the near future is take MzE HTTPS-only, but that won't really have any effect besides changing the URL.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Is the software too old to add embedded Tweets?
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

So, just my opinion - Unless there are serious security or compatibility issues, I would really rather have this version of the forum software. I love the Rep system. And I love the themes. Dark themes like the Malazan Empire or the Venom theme are my favourite. I do not like whitish themes.

On a sidenote, the 17th Shard forums seem to have a different software - they don't have themes, but they do have a rep system.

I just want to note that no hookers nor blow were ever purchased w forum money.

Also, no whiskey, weed, HD TVs, Ferrari rentals, llamas with loose morals, branding irons, Mongolian midget services, trips to Vegas, that thing sitting in the corner of Silencer's garage, Venge's silk underwear, D'rek's new computers, and absolutely no orbital death rays whatsoever.

None.

None at all.

Really.

You can take the reputation system from my cold dead hands.

Seems to be doing fine. The old saying goes that If you're not noticing the admins or moderators doing anything, things are probably working as intended.

Well I have noticed that there's a Llama masquerading as Bubba but that's normal this time a year. I think.
