Came across this nugget in BaB

Quote

‘In Aren, Seven Cities. Since the killing of the Fist last year, there has been an investigation. It seems that his plans to usurp imperial authority have been uncovered, together with his murder of several officers who would not cooperate. His death diverted civil unrest that would have cost the lives of thousands. I believe the price upon the head of his killer, together with his fugitive followers, has been rescinded.’

This is what the QoD tells Yusen, the Captain of the mercenary troop hired by Spite.
Is this the same killing of the Fist of Aren as the one that Barathol Mekhar killed? That was quite a while back, if I remember. So when does that put BaB timeline wise? Plus, the T'lan Imass then slaughtered the people in Aren for nothing. The Fist himself was going to go renegade. Killing him makes sense for the Malazan command. Also, I remember from somewhere that Dancer had argued with Laseen regarding her actions in Aren that led to the slaughter of so many. So this places BaB during Kellanved's reign, which makes no sense because Murk and Sour, the two mages, are from Dujek's Fifth Army, as they mentioned some chapters back.

And if this killing isn't related to the one way back, then Aren sure has some highly incompetent Fists and High Fists ruling it over the years.
What think you all?

Scratch that, the answer was on the next page. Still, Aren has some really crappy rulers...

Oh, just that Yusen, the captain of the mercs had himself killed the Fist of Aren when the Fist suggested insurrection against the Malazans, while Burustan, the Seven Cities woman killed his aides. Clearly a very different event from the one in which Barathol killed the Fist of Aren for... his own to-be supposed insurrection, would you believe it ! A cesspool of backstabbers, this Aren place...
