Why does she keep him around. What use is he to her?

Have you ever had to carry a little kid around all day, like at Disneyland?
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

You have a way of making a point :-)

I think there are many reasons, the above probably being the main one.
She might also have been interested in moulding him for some future role.

I think she also used Torrent as a hostage to force Toc to send that really nasty message to Tool.

A powerful immortal god or whatever she is can't drag a kid around?

Also I believe that at one stage Torrent himself wanted to stay... and the kid had some ability that would manifest if he wasn't there to keep him calm.... I am forgetting the details here

Yeah, I think she does it because him being around keeps the kids calmer, and Torrent in-turn stays because of the kids.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Also, she is Olar Ethil. She likes to feel important and Torrent provides an avenue for her to show how off how powerful and grand she is. So despite her complaining about his presence, she probably secretly enjoys the idea of having someone around to bully and discomfort.

Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Yeah, it's more a case of Torrent wanting to stay because of the kids, and Olar Ethil letting him tag along because he both takes care of the kids and provides an avenue for her to show off and comlain, and Torrent stays also because where else would he go?

As you said, a powerful and immortal god, mother of Burn, undead twin of T'iam and all the other things she's boasted of during the series, it's not likely to do her ego any favours if she has to drag the children around herself is it? =P

This way, free baby sitter who chose to care for the children of his own volition without her having to threaten, bribe, coerce etc, given she got all the others to turn away. I wonder if also there's an element of preservation there in that with Torrent caring for the children, especially Absi, it avoids a direct confrontation with whatever power Absi has and Tool (stretching it a bit and wondering if Absi, if in danger, could have brought Tool to him). After all, she did kill his dog.

Plus as has been said above, where would he go? I think at one point he himself said he didn't belong in the company of Gruntle and the others and as he's the 'Last of the Awl' especially as the children were already being subsumed into Barghast culture and are likely dead from either the Nahruk or the T'lan...gotta pass the time somehow!
