So only on episode 5 of season 1 but I'm glad I'm watching. Harry Mudd appeared! Rainn Wilson is definitely the right guy for the role.

Wasn't a big fan of the portrayal. Mudd in TOS was a rogue but mostly harmless. Mudd in Discovery is a sociopath.

I never knew he was an existing canon character!

Huh? Mudd in TOS:

Drugging mass groups of women to sell them?

Mostly harmless?

If I remember correctly (and I might not as it was a while ago), the drug made them more attractive to others so the con was on the miners rather than the women who knew they were on the drug. Kirk gives one a placebo at one point. All three signed on with him to escape situations in which marriage prospects were slim or non-existent.

However, what I meant was that in TOS he is a criminal and generally up to no good but he isn't a cold blooded murderer. His rap sheet in TOS suggests a history of dealing in stolen goods and counterfeit money.

Here's Rainn Wilson talking about Mudd and why DISCO darkens his portrayal from what we know.

Harry Mudd as he was in TOS doesn't fit on DISCO during a war...the things he did on TOS means that he probably really would have been how DISCO portrays him...you just didn't see it because the TOS episodes are played for laughs. But the guy that he was ABSOLUTELY could be a sociopath, we just didn't see it in TOS.

I think it's an organic character deepening myself, and Rainn is BRILLIANT.

Lastly, does Mudd, of all people, need to be untouched? He was on like 3 episodes of TOS, it's not like he's sacrosanct as a character to need an exacting portrayal as the fop they played him as on TOS.

I personally found it jarring which impacts my enjoyment of episodes. Other opinions, obviously, are available. For me, it is the wrong order. The light hearted scoundrel turns into a cold blooded killer I can accept. With Discovery being earlier, the change goes in reverse.

My take of Discovery so far:

Season 1 - good overall story which jarred with things like Mudd, the Klingon changes, etc
Season 2 - didn't like the story though Pike's portrayal was good. Felt Section 31 was too well known in the Federation rather than the secret they were portrayed as previously. Nimoy has spoiled for me any other actor being Spock.
Season 3 - only seen episode 1 - thought it was the best episode so far. Hopeful for the rest of it.

See my main introduction to ST comes from the Fleet Command game and they've based it on the latest movies (so Khan in there looks like Cumberbatch etc) and more recently, Discovery. So if they've based game version of Mudd from the Discovery version of him if course I'll like that because it's what I know.

This is really weird and the the timing of this to coincide with the recent discussion here is chillingly similar. So, this week I was watching an episode of El Rey Nation. It's a geek discussion show where they talk all things (and debate all things) geek and geekery/geektastic/geekcraft. So in this episode they were having a showdown about alien races and they brought up The Great Gazoo from The Flinstones and Q from Star Trek. And during the discussion this über-nerd, who is a regular on the show, made a very cogent point, and that is The Great Gazoo and Q are one and the same. And you know what? I totally see it.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Gazoo

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_(Star_Trek)

Take a beat to think on it, and your mind will be blown.

Second half of the season opener was solidly done. And again, the end scene got me super emotional.

I REALLY liked the Wild West/swinging saloon doors motif in this episode. It was not overwrought, but just there enough to feel it as a trope. Same with Black Bart the smuggler dude who runs things because no one can stop him..and though she came in RIGHT on cue (after her speech about the planet being an unknown/possible violence) Georgiou's entrance was perfect as was her bravado. I also liked the parasite ice bent. It gave the episode a bit of a Classic Trek Threat vibe, without having it be part of the whole story.

Lastly, I would like Tig Notaro (Jett) to live sarcastically in my head please. She. Is. The. Damned. Best. Every single scene and line is note perfect. I'll be pissed if she ever leaves the show as she adds such a deadpan humour vibe to the whole thing. Amazing.

Episode 9 of season 1 and I'm really enjoying this show!

For reference, that's the one where Stamets has to make 133 jumps to get a lock on the sensors of the cloaked Ship of the Dead and Burnham and Tyler are on the ship to plant the sensors. grand stuff.

If your'e enjoying S1 this much (and I did upon my re-watch as well), then S2 and what we've seen of 3 will be really enjoyable for you!

Pretty much agreed across the board. I will say, with regards to the ice, that my first thought was "Because OF COURSE the ice is parasitic!"

Really, there was never any chance that it would have been anything but.
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

I got quite a Firefly vibe - particularly for Whitefall and Patience. That is in no way a bad thing.

Excellent second epsiode and fully agree that Tig Notaro is sensational. I like her and Stamets together. Thought Saru and Tilly's exchange about her being a very good first impression was lovely too.

Started season 2. The first season was excellent and I love all the characters, especially Phillipa and Tilly.

Ooh and Pike is here! He's one of the best officers in the game.

Pike has "trying to be cool Dad" vibes and it is THE BEST.

Hah yes! I didn't quite pick up on that from the one episode I've watched with him in but now you mention it, that's exactly it!

I think its a toss up with between Pike's "I'm your cool dad" and Georgiou's "And I'm your slightly psychopathic mom" for which is the best character in season 2
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. These two and Tilly's inappropriate and awkward enthusiastic outbursts are absolutely the core of why I love this show right now.

Finished. Enjoyed. Don’t like those Klingons at all. Beautiful presentation on ships and make up.

The Klingons get...er...fixed in S2. They look more like they do in every other bit of Trek media.

The showrunners of S1 were fired for abuse of their cast and crew, so S2 onwards does a bunch of little fixes. Nothing major, but notable.

The Spore Drive is actually really cool. It gives a non-warp way to travel through the universe. And the ship-flip effect for it is Cool AF. Black Alert, btw, means spore drive jump.

I don't want to spoil anything for you, but hope you keep watching and catch up. This is now my second favourite Trek show just under TNG, and when it started I hated it. Take that as you will.
