There was a major EarthQuake in NewZealand this afternoon. Hopefully our Silencer and our other Kiwi's are ok and not being evacuated.
Huge offshore quake prompts New Zealand to evacuate some towns
By Charlotte Greenfield | WELLINGTON
Civil defense authorities in New Zealand ordered the evacuation of some coastal areas early on Friday due to fears that an offshore earthquake could cause a tsunami, although agencies in other countries said it was not a major threat.
The magnitude 7.1 quake struck at 4:37 a.m. (1637 GMT) at a depth of 55 km (34 miles) 130 km north-east of Te Araroa, off the North Island, according to government earthquake detection service Geonet.
Twitter users in North Island reported being woken up by shaking. The disaster management authority issued an advisory of a potential tsunami threat in coastal areas.
People living on the coast near the town of Gisborne, the area nearest the quake’s epicenter, were told to evacuate and get to higher ground or go as far inland as they could.
The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management and its scientific advisors were still assessing the severity of the tsunami threat.
But the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center and the Chilean Navy said there was no danger of a tsunami on the Pacific coasts of the Americas.
New Zealand media reported some power outages in the east coast region.

Slept through it
I'm in Auckland so we just got a few wobbles.
I think most of the schools on the East Coast are open and the Tsunami threat has been downgraded. Which is good, because generally when we get Tsunami warnings people wander on down to the beach to take a look.

Apperantly the news here missed the earthquake. Either you guys are too far away or they are all asleep...
Hopefully it stays with wobbles

Yeah, I slept through it too. Given the magnitude the current news sounds like there's not too much damage which is great.
Thabks for thinking of us! Don't know if we have any members on the East coast but either way hope we get through this with minimal damage...

Just heard a brilliant report from a wonderful Newshub journalist 'on the scene'.
The worst was his stacked firewood pile had shifted.
I think this will be a bit of a non-event.

Also, I saw some footage of things falling off shelves at a supermarket - it was about 8 bottles of shampoo lying on the ground
Not that I'm complaining, I'm pretty happy it's apparently reasonably minor!

Also illustrates why the Richter Scale is not a great tool for measuring earthquake severity.

It also demonstrates the value of having building codes that account for earthquakes AND sticking to those building codes for all construction.

Ok so the quake last night was quite a bit more serious then the last major one. Directly under the South Island and a 7.9. The last report that I saw 2 dead. I hope that everyone forum wise is ok and safe. Our prayers are with you. After all New Zealand is a flee to country for half of us state side.

That's pretty scary, and yah hope the best for forumites. Being swallowed up by the earth itself should rank higher on people's fear lists imo.
