(aslo i get the feeling al jazeera is sympathetic to the saudis as little is mentioned in terms of why the iranians would denounce executing a terrorist)
So this piece of news just cropped up on my news feed. I don't suppose someone who has a better background in international relations could tell me just what is the history between these two countries as sure as hell this didn't happen overnight.

Iran is the most powerful Shiite muslim nation in the region. Saudi Arabia is the most powerful Sunni muslim nation in the region. Saudi Arabia has just executed a Shiite cleric among a large number of other prisoners.

Iranian(Persian) civilization is very different from Arabic and has a different interpretation of Islam. It is not just Sunni vs Shia.
Iran was actually Sunni for a long time before it was converted to Shia.

I have a hard time seeing how a diplomatic tussle between Iran and Saudi Arabia could ever lead to global war. I mean we all like the oil but this isn't a fuel dispute.

Those two, not so much.

The Collected Adventures of Vladimir in the Ukraine... well, that's a more likely candidate to do the whole world at war thing.

And even that's pushing it, for too many reasons to go into here.

Saudis and Iran don't have a common border. Neither has nukes. Other Sunni nations aren't bandwagoning in cutting off relations with Iran.

It means things will likely escalate in Yemen and possibly Syria (where the 2 fight their proxy wars), but this isn't a WW3-type scenario.

It isn't? So the fact that Saudi Arabia has been deliberately keeping oil prices low at an average 20% loss only to now be confronted with an impending lift on Iran's oil export embargo is just a quirky coincidence?

In light of the Saudi-Iranian face-off the oil prices continue falling... cumulative effect punishes non-Middle Eastern oil producers, especially shale oil companies. Also, Russia, which also has to lower natural gas prices, making Europe rejoice.

Also, Qatar and Djibouti joined SA in severing relations with Iran.

That being said, unless Iraq explodes into an all-out sectarian war, WW3 is not on the cards in the near future, once again b/c no common border.

IMHO.

OK, now I'm even more confused. I thought Qatar was Sunni and didn't get along with Iran? I also thought KSA were supposed to be the biggest offenders when it comes to funding for IS and al-Nusra (or whatever they call themselves now)?

I've absolutely no idea what's going on. In The Guardian article I read about the issue they mentioned Qatar's support for Muslim Brotherhood, and the MB want to get rid of the monarchies in SA, Bahrain, UAE, and Egypt. I think that is the true source of tensions this time rather than anything to do with the Sunni-Shia divide.

Yeah I read that bit too. Is it really that big of a thing? I figured with the Gordian Knot of relationships in that part of the world it would slide since they're all funding one bunch of arseholes or other, but it seems the support (or lack thereof) for the monarchies is the tipping point.

Selfish hypocrites. SMH.

Then again, I guess when it comes to being selfish hypocrites they're not much different to the rest of the world's leadership. :D

Seems a stretch, but I wonder if this has anything to do with reports in the British press yesterday that Theresa May's government is suppressing a report about the sources of funding of extremist groups in the UK. People have obviously been demanding it be released with strong suspicion that it's coming from Saudi Arabia, and the timing of them suddenly now pointing at Qatar and accusing them of a similar thing (but with Iran's help of course) is suspicious.
